REVIEW Vendetta Road (Torpedo Ink #3) by Christine Feehan

Vendetta Road
(Torpedo Ink #3) by Christine Feehan

Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: January 28, 2020
Format: eBook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Berkley

Vengeance Road by Christine Feehan is the third book in the Torpedo Ink series, and while entertaining will definitely not be for everyone. Explosive, action packed, and filled with romance, its also filled with explicit violence and sex scenes.

While the members of Torpedo Ink are all powerful in their own right and have worked on building a life for themselves on the coast, they are not by any means "stable". All of the members suffered long term abuse when they were children, and its left them scarred and unable to perform as 'normal' members of society. When they find their person though, thats it for them and Ice and Soleil are no exception. The book is dark and full of scary things (like the human traffickers the club works to hunt down and stop), but there are also happy moments.

Ice and Soleil grow together, and figure out their own way to make their needs work. As opposed to some of the other relationships in the series, theirs felt balanced. I'm definitely commited to seeing more of their relationship in the future, and hope they continue to show up in more books (like Anya/Reaper, Steele/Breezy, and Blythe/Czar have). I would recommend this book to mature fans of paranormal romance, who love the motorcycle club sub-genre and the found family trope.

REVIEW Recovery Road (Torpedo Ink #8) by Christine Feehan

Recovery Road (Torpedo Ink #8) by Christine Feehan
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: January 24, 2023
Format: Audiobook (Personal Library)
Publisher: Berkley

Christine Feehan’s Recovery Road is the latest addition to the Torpedo Ink series and focuses on Kir ‘Master’ Vasiliev. The only member of the club who still has a criminal record, Master is the one the club calls on when they need to take care of things within the walls of a prison. Fiercely loyal to Czar and the others, Master does his duty with the knowledge that each return to prison is slowly killing him and the thought that his brothers and sisters in arms see him as expendable. Once he meets Ambrielle Moore and saves her from a ring of human traffickers, however, both of their lives are changed forever.

Before I go into anything further, please, please check the trigger warnings before starting to read this book. If you’ve been keeping up with the series and the members of Torpedo Ink, you know that Torpedo Ink did not have happy childhoods and Master was no exception to that rule. Despite all of the heavy topics the author deals with, they do a great job with balancing the violence and darkness with the romance and action. The list I’ve included below is by no means exhaustive, but it should at least give readers an idea of what to expect.

I really found myself connecting with Master and Ambrielle. They both have a way with numbers, and their relationship seemed more authentic and real than those featured in previous books. No matter the fact that they only knew each other for minutes prior to getting married, they just seemed to click like they found their missing piece. I loved how Ambrielle brought Master out of his shell - the scene in the Floating Hat was touching, and it was nice to see how invested the club members are in all of the children. I was extremely amused by Seychelle and Savage’s prank on Jackson - I burst out laughing, which isn’t something I can say has happened often in the books I’ve read by Christine Feehan (the last time I can remember was maybe Mikhail’s prank on Gregori in Dark Celebration?)

On a separate note, I really appreciate how they switched narrators from Jim Frangione to Ryan West. Given that Jim Frangione has narrated so many of Christine Feehan’s books for her other series, the new narrator helps differentiate them a bit.

Overall, Recovery Road is another powerful, dynamic and emotional paranormal romance title from Christine Feehan. It, of course, also includes the sizzling scenes that the author is known for. Master and Ambrielle’s story is one of the deepest in the series so far and definitely tugged on my heartstrings. I hope they continue to make appearances in future books.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Human trafficking (victims, discussed), Rape (Victims, discussed), Explicit sex, Pedophilia (Victims, discussed), Torture (Flashbacks and discussion), Child abuse (victims, discussed), Parental Death (on page), Violence, Guns

Please, please check the trigger warnings before reading this book. If you’ve been keeping up with the series and the members of Torpedo Ink, you know that Torpedo Ink did not have happy childhoods and Savage is one of the most damaged. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it should at least give you an idea of what you might be exposed to should you read the book. Prospective readers should also be aware that this is a counterpart to Annihilation Road. It gets much darker than that book, and if you didn’t feel comfortable with Annihilation Road’s content then you should really reconsider reading Savage Road. In my opinion, it’s not necessary to understand the full scope of the series. I do appreciate the care that the author put into developing the story, and readers who don’t mind the darker or more taboo parts should absolutely 100% enjoy it.

Savage undoubtedly has a darker fetish or kink, with the sexual sadism tendencies he developed while in the ‘school’ in Russia and still maintains to this day. Seychelle loves him enough to enter his world willingly, and all of their interactions are consensual. Their sex is intense (its usually rough or involves some element of BDSM), and it does border on abusive at times (Seychelle is usually left with bruises or welts, though Savage’s experience ensures he never breaks the skin). Ms. Feehan handled things extremely well in my opinion - aftercare and safewords are a must in Savage’s eyes, and Seychelle does end up using her safeword once or twice. Savage portrays a hardened badass on the outside, but his tenderness with Seychelle was so sweet to witness and I wholly agree with her assessment that he is really a teddy bear.

“What if I love you more than ever, Savage? What if you love more than ever? What if our bond is so strong, so unbreakable, no one can ever tear us apart?”

One thing I love about all of Christine Feehan’s books is that there is equal give and take in the relationships she depicts. It's never one-sided, where one person is doing all the sacrificing and compromising. This trend holds true for Savage and Seychelle’s relationship. Yes, Seychelle is making sacrifices to be able to be the partner Savage needs in the bedroom. But Savage is also making some compromises to be able to meet her halfway. They both end up affecting each other’s life in a positive way. For example, there is a very pivotal and important scene in this book where Savage gives Seychelle his blessing to talk with her friends about their relationship (even what they do in the bedroom) and get support if she needs it. That’s a huge concession from the Savage we met in the first book of the Torpedo Ink series, Judgment Road. There’s a particular scene towards the end of the book, where he receives a meaningful birthday gift from members of the Sea Haven community. I absolutely melted at that scene, and I think it's one of my favorite in all of Christine Feehan’s books. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens though (conversely, if you would rather not read the book because of the content, but you still want to know what happens, feel free to reach out to me privately to get all the details).

One of my favorite parts of the Torpedo Ink series is the paranormal aspect. The stories are grounded in a contemporary setting, but each club member has some type of gift or ability that is crucial to the club’s success. I’ve also found it intriguing how each pairing tends to have very complementary abilities. The author expands on Savage’s abilities in Annihilation Road, and this book focuses more on exploring Seychelle’s abilities. One quote I’ve recently seen encapsulates the dynamic between Savage, Seychelle, and how she uses her abilities very well: “Instead of emulating patriarchy, try using your masculinity to protect your lover’s ability to be kind. Be a soft place where kindness doesn’t need armor”. Take away from that what you will.

Overall, Savage Road is another dynamic and powerful paranormal romance release from Christine Feehan. Readers should definitely pick up Annihilation Road before Savage Road, but if you want to skip Savage Road because of the content that's totally ok too. Savage and Seychelle do get a happy and very satisfying ending at the end of the first book.

Vengeance Road by Christine Feehan is a second chance romance story with a motorcycle club and paranormal romance flair. I enjoyed the read and look forward to seeing what’s next for the club in the future! Please remember to check the trigger warnings (which are available at the end of the review) before starting the book! Torpedo Ink deals with a lot of dark topics, and as such there are multiple potential triggers within the read.

Something I noticed on my most recent re-read of this book is that there are a couple of similarities between this series and Ms. Feehan’s Dark series. Both Steele and Gregori Daratrazanoff are the second in command of Torpedo Ink and the Carpathians respectively. Both are renowned healers, yet also feared for their fighting ability. And they both like having things their way and aren’t the biggest fans of when their partner disagrees (though they do occasionally concede to their partner’s judgment when they can’t argue with their logic).

Steele and Breezy’s relationship wasn’t always as swoon-worthy for me as some of the other pairings in Torpedo Ink. I wish he had been a bit more kind when Breezy had explained the situation about Zane. Like, “yes I get why you were so scared and hid Zane from everyone but it wasn’t okay” instead of going caveman on her. She had a very legitimate reason to fear raising her child in a motorcycle club, and he was the one who threw her out in the first place. How was she supposed to know, especially at such a young age, that he did it to protect her? Despite some minor issues, I still enjoyed the ride and getting to see them have a happy ending at the end of the book (I would not have finished this book if anything bad had happened to Zane).

The narrator Jim Frangione did a great job with the performance for this book. I do wish that each series had a separate narrator to differentiate things a bit. Overall, another great read for fans of paranormal romance and motorcycle club romance stories. If you enjoy this series, I recommend checking out Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalkers or Shadow Riders series. Both have similar vibes to Torpedo Ink and include similar levels of violence and darkness.

I’ve read Feehan’s Dark series, Ghostwalker series, and Shadow Rider series so I was hopeful when reading Judgement Road (which is the official start of the Torpedo Ink books). If you want the first book with a member of Torpedo Ink (Czar and his love interest Blythe), you’ll need to read Bound Together from the Sea Haven series. I loved the premise and the idea of the whole series, but I felt that the execution was a bit lacking in some areas. Please make sure you check out the content warning list at the end of the review before reading this book so you don’t go in unprepared.

The Torpedo Ink books are undoubtedly dark and deal with difficult subjects. The torture and abuse that the members of the club were subjected to in the “school” in Russia have left their mark on them permanently. It was emotional to see how much they’ve bonded together and become closer as a result. Their devotion to each other is quite literally inked into the skin of their backs. At first glance, this might seem like it’s simply a dark motorcycle club romance book, but Ms. Feehan threw incorporated paranormal elements (similar to her other series). All of the members of Torpedo Ink have special abilities that usually relate to their nicknames (the special abilities enabled them to survive the torture they endured at the school in Russia, and enable them to save others in present-day who are suffering from similar situations).

One thing I liked about the other series was how the members of each pairing are flawed or challenged, but they grow together. I didn’t really see that as much with Reaper and Anya. Their relationship didn’t feel balanced. I would recommend this book to mature fans of paranormal romance, who love the motorcycle club sub-genre and the found family trope.
