REVIEW Terror at the Gates (Blood of Lilith #1) by Scarlett St. CLAIR

Terror at the Gates (Blood of Lilith #1) by Scarlett St. Clair
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: July 8 2025
Format: Audiobook (Personal Library) + eARC (NetGalley)
Publisher: Bloom Books

“We were not responsible for lust in men. We existed, and they desired.”

I just finished Scarlett St. Clair's Terror at the Gates, the first of the Blood of Lilith series, and I definitely think it's a case of the right book at the right time. I would recommend this book to adult urban fantasy readers who enjoy slow burn romance and feminine rage (primarily at the failure of those in power to protect those who should have been under their protection). There is a lot going on, with dark themes, so if anyone is sensitive I would recommend checking the content warnings before diving in.

First of all, I want to say that the audiobook narrators Laura Horowitz and Tristan Warden did an excellent job bringing Lilith and Zahariev to life. The chemistry is electric. And I think the contrast between Zahariev and most of the other male figures in positions of power throughout the city in the book is striking. Zahariev is ready to burn the world down for Lilith as soon as she asks, no matter what it costs her. Lilith's father, on the other hand, doesn't even bother to ask what drove her away from their home until she forces him to face his failure to protect her.

As I'm writing this, the news keeps handing women reasons to be enraged. The Cornell 7 case is blowing up in particular (metaphorically speaking), and I think it's an important reminder that the impetus shouldn't just be on women to defend themselves. It's also on men not being something that women have to defend themselves from.

I loved the worldbuilding in this book. Religion is a central theme, but while there are general story archetypes appearing it's not really clearly based on any one religion. The magic system doesn’t get as much time to shine, but I didn’t mind as it wasn’t as important to the events of this book.

Overall, no notes. Amazing read, amazing author, amazing storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The heroine is fierce and the love interest is a consent king. I'm curious to see how the author will expand the world in Book 2 of the series, Coiled at the Roots.

REVIEW The Cursed Rose (The Bone Spindle #3) by Leslie Vedder

The Cursed Rose (The Bone Spindle #3) by Leslie Vedder
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: February 6, 2024
Publisher: Razorbill
Format: Physical Book + Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)

I read The Cursed Rose by Leslie Vedder, the third book in The Bone Spindle series a couple years after reading the first two books and it was fun to dive back into the world. With a cross of multiple fairytales meeting Indiana Jones-style adventure, there was a LOT going on in the book. Following the events of the second book, The Severed Thread, the rag tag crew has been split up and they work towards the final battle with the Spindle Witch.

While the series is marketed as a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, there are so many more fairytale influences woven into the story. I really like how things came together with the confrontation against the Spindle Witch and how it continued to build on the worldbuilding of the previous books. Aurora and the Rose Witches were central to the story, and Shane and Fi’s journey into her tomb was heart-pounding as a reader. One of the central relationships in the book, Shane and Fi start the story in separate places, but work their way back together at the end of the book.

The character growth over the course of the series was impactful. Sadly, Briar doesn’t get as much of a journey given that he’s stuck in his beastly form. Red, Fi, and Shane serve as the point of view characters, and make some major strides. However, I was most surprised to see how much time the author spent on going into the Spindle Witch’s background. It was twisty and a major surprise; the history between Aurora, the Lord of the Butterflies, and the Spindle Witch was also a major force pushing the storyline forward.

Overall, this was an excellent book and close to the series. I like how the storylines were wrapped up while also leaving room for more adventures in the future. Audiobook narrator Lindsey Dorcus did an excellent job bringing the many points of view to life with her performance in the audiobook. I highly recommend this to young adult fans of fantasy and fairy tales, and authors like Marissa Meyer or Holly Black.

REVIEW The Baby Dragon Bakery (The Baby Dragon Series #2) by A.T. Qureshi

The Baby Dragon Bakery (The Baby Dragon Series #2) by A.T. Qureshi
Rating: 3 Stars
Release Date: August 28, 2025
Format: eBook (Kindle Unlimited) + Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Avon

Check out my review of the first book in the series, The Baby Dragon Cafe

The Baby Dragon Bakery by A.T. Qureshi was an adorable sequel to The Baby Dragon Cafe. While not relying on as many fantasy elements as the first book (no baby mystical creatures participate in the romancce plot in a meaningful way), it's still a cozy romance with just a dash of fantastical elements.

Lavinia and Theo have been best friends forever, and basically everyone knows they have feelings for each other except for them. I did find it harder to be as invested in their relationship, with the massive miscommunications that went on repeatedly between them, but things work out in the end and everyone gets their happily ever after so I was happy. If you're getting frustrated like I was, I recommend pushing through towards at least the middle of the book. And for those who are invested in the first book in the series, Aiden, Saphira, and Sparky do make multiple appearancces.

A highlight of this story was all of the yummy food items and baked goods that make an appearance. Theo's passion as a baker was evident, and if you listen to the audiobook you can hear the author and the editor discuss how much work went into getting those descriptions just right. I appreciated how the author used food to highlight the differences between Lavinia and Theo's families, and the dynamics at home (one goes out of their way to make a favorite food, one doesn't even bother...)

Overall, this was an entertaining book and I enjoyed reading it. It wasn't as impactful as the first book, particulary complex, or one of those books I'll be thinking about for a while, but it hit the spot when I wanted a cozy book for an afternoon reading session under a warm blanket. If you have Kindle Unlimited or a library card, I highly recommend checking it out. Ishmeen Dhesi and Yuvi Bains did a good job bringing the story to life with their performancce in the audiobook narration. I'm also very curious to see how the series will be rounded out with Emmy and Luke's story in The Baby Dragon Bookshop.

REVIEW The Baby Dragon Cafe (The Baby Dragon Series #1) by A.T. Qureshi

The Baby Dragon Cafe (The Baby Dragon Series #1) by A.T. Qureshi
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: January 16, 2025
Format: eBook (Kindle Unlimited) + Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Avon

A.T. Qureshi’s The Baby Dragon Cafe, the first book in The Baby Dragon series, was a cute and cozy fantasy romance book. Narrators Ash Raju and Hunter Johns did an excellent job bringing the story to life with their performance in the audiobook. It’s very reminiscent of Travis Baldree’s Legends and Lattes series.

This book has been popping up in my recommendations for a while, and I’m so happy that I finally picked it up (thank you Kindle Unlimited). The baby dragon cafe has just the right touch of whimsical while also being somewhat recognizable, being very similar to a cat cafe while adding a bit more chaos and charm with the baby dragons running amuck. The author also did a great job of capturing the small town vibes you’d expect from a Hallmark movie. I’d love to see a map or something similar of the area, as there are also other magical creatures that are briefly mentioned (and somewhat domesticated in certain cases).

Saphira and Aiden had a lovely relationship that blossomed over the course of the book. They embody the grumpy x sunshine trope. I thought it was hilarious how Sparky played into their relationship; at first he was jealous when Saphira paid attention to Aiden and not him, and then getting jealous when Saphira paid attention to anyone but him and Aiden. As a reader, I really appreciated how Aiden’s family didn’t add to any drama, and welcomed Saphira with open arms. The fake marriage and the ‘there’s only one bed’ troped worked out well too, and everything came together nicely. I’m especially excited by the epilogue (cue the happily ever after).

Overall, an excellent read. I’m so excited to read the rest of the books in the series, The Baby Dragon Bakery and The Baby Dragon Bookshop and I hope Saphira, Aiden, and Sparky make more appearances. I highly recommend the book to those who enjoy low stakes fantasy and happily ever after romances.

REVIEW All Superheroes Need Photo Ops (Supers in the City #2) by Elizabeth Stephens

All Supheroes Need Photo Ops (Supers in the City #2) by Elizabeth Stephens
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: November 25, 2025
Format: eBook and Audiobook (Kindle Unlimited)
Publisher: Montlake

I thought that the first book in the Supers in the City series by Elizabeth Stephens, All Superheroes Need PR, was great but the sequel All Superheroes Need Photo Ops blew it out of the water. Monica, the war photographer that we meet in the first book, has been adjusting to life out of war zones and following the lifes of various 'Champions', or the group of beings that fell from the sky when they were young and are now considered superheroes. The Wyvern, one of the leads of the previous book, is now the most popular superhero on the planet. However, the former top dog, Taranis, isn't thrilled that he's losing out on the attention and contracts Monica to follow him around for photo ops. Sparks fly, and a much more dynamic relationship ensues (along with more superpowered clashes).

Without spoiling the events of the first book, its safe to say that the action is moving very quickly. The author revealed more of the mystery surrounding the champions and their powers in this book, and it left me excited for the rumored third book in the series (and who I think the main focus will be). Monica and Taranis have a very different relationship than Vanessa and the Wyvern do, but it makes sense for them. There were definitely scenes that get very spicy (i.e. the limo post gala), which put this very clearly into adult romance territory. The action also gets more intense, and graphic, so anyone whose worried about being triggered should check the content warnings before opening the book.

Overall, this was a fantastic read. I highly recommend it to fans of adult romance, especially with the superheroes tropes or monster/alien romance. A great choice if you have Kindle Unlimited.Sean Crisden and Emery Erickson did an excellent job bringing Monica and Taranis’ perspectives to life with their performance in the audiobook.

REVIEW At the End of the River Styx by Michelle Kulwicki

At the End of the River Styx by Michelle Kulwicki
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: September 24, 2024
Format: eARC (Courtesy of Publisher)
Publisher: Page Street YA

At the End of the River Styx by Michelle Kulwicki is a deep and emotional book that readers have to be in the right headspace for. Mixing elements of romance and fantasy, the author delves into more than just the recent stereotypical tropes you see on Netflix (i.e. meet cutes). Zan and Bastian are not just separated by time or distance, but also entirely different planes of existence.

This book is one of the deepest young adult novels I've read about grief and the pain of losing someone you love. I don't think I've read another novel that so emotionally impactful about grief since I read Dustin Thao's You've Reached Sam. Both the book's leads are dealing with enough emotional overwhelm to drown someone, and at times I just wanted to give them a hug. And while there are moments of heartbreak, there are also moments of budding hope so don't let that make you think this is a book drowning in negativity and sadness.

All of that being acknowledged though, I do think this is a book that requires readers to be in the right headspace to receive it. While its a contemporary novel at its core, the worldbuilding required to build a story of two people interacting across separate planes of existence is intense. But I'm glad that I stuck with it and ultimately was able to find the right time to read it and fully take it in. Ultimately, I listened to the audiobook and I think the narrators were what helped me finish (Dillon Sickels and Jeremy Gardner did an excellent job with their performance).

Overall, this was a very unique and interesting read. It's unclear at this point in time, but after the ending of the book I would love to see what happens next for both characters. If you're a romance reader who's open to a book with a unique structure and elements of fantasy/mythology, this is worth giving a chance.

About the Book

Before he can be reborn, Zan has spent 499 years bound in a 500-year curse to process souls for the monstrous Ferryman―and if he fails he dies.

In Portland, Bastian is grieving. He survived a car accident that took his mother and impulse-purchased a crumbling bookstore with the life insurance money.

But in sleep, death’s mark keeps dragging Bastian into Zan’s office. It shouldn’t be a problem to log his soul and forget he ever existed. But when Zan follows Bastian through his memories of grief and hope, Zan realizes that he is not ready for Bastian to die.

The boys borrow time hiding in the memories of the dead while the Ferryman hunts them, and Zan must decide if he’s willing to give up his chance at life to save Bastian―and Bastian must decide if he’s willing to keep living if it means losing Zan.

REVIEW All Superheroes Need PR (Supers in the City #1) by Elizabeth Stephens

All Superheroes Need PR by Elizabeth Stephens
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: May 27, 2025
Publisher: Montlake
Format: eBook + Audiobook (Kindle Unlimited)

All Superheroes Need PR by Elizabeth Stephens wasn't even on my radar until I saw a recommendation for it from author Katee Robert, and I'm so glad I picked it up on a whim from Kindle Unlimited. I completely devoured it in a day. Switching between Dara Brown and Sean Bassett's narrration along with the ebook made me so excited. And I was not expecting that ending.

Decades ago, 48 beings from outer space (in the form of children) landed on Earth. With fantastical powers, some of them developed into what we would consider heroes and some of them became supervillains. Some never picked a side. Roland (previously Pyro and later Wyvern) decides he wants to become a hero after much negotiations and needs a PR team to help make it happen. Enter Vanessa and her team. Both Roland and Vanessa are drawn together by feelings they can't explain, and once they finally do get together strange things start to happen. I'm a big fan of the superhero genre, and I was so excited by this author's take on things. Also, as previously mentioned, I was not expecting how things played out at the end and I all but screeched while reading it. I know Monika and Taranis have a book coming up in November 2025 (All Superheroes Need Photo Opps) but I really hope as many characters as possible in the series get their HEA because they were all amazing. I'm also very excited to hopefully learn more about some of the other beings who fell to Earth, as we haven't even touched on most of the 48.

Overall, a fantastic read and a fantastic story. I highly recommend this book to adult romance readers who like diverse reads with elements of superheroes and the paranormal.

REVIEW The Dos and Donuts of Love by Adiba Jaigirdar

The Dos and Donuts of Love by Adiba Jaigirdar
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: June 6,  2023
Format: eBook (Personal Library) + Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends

Adiba Jaigirdar’s The Dos and Donuts of Love is a very sweet young adult contemporary sapphic romance, that captures both the unpredictable fun nature of reality TV shows and the realities of being a teenager growing up in a world of social media.  Shireen, the main character, is a Bengali teen living in Ireland and working at her parent’s donut shop. When the chance comes up to enter a baking competition and win some money to support her future, she jumps at the opportunity. However, things become very complicated when you throw in her ex also competing in the competition (cue love triangle).

Shireen is a very relatable teenage character. She’s very flawed, and makes mistakes (which she later owns up to). I really appreciated how she had such a strong support system around her, and how they were very supportive of her identity. As someone who’s guilty of not always being aware of smaller regions/cultures in the world, I also want to acknowledge how Shireen very respectfully corrected people who assumed she was from India and took the opportunity to educate on the Bangladeshi culture.

“You’re supposed to be the ‘bigger person’, and for some reason that means bearing it in silence.”

Social media can be a cruel place, and keyboard warriors are just jerks. The author did not shy away from difficult but relevant topics in this book (see the content warnings below for more specific details). After the first episode of the baking show airs, Shireen takes a lot of heat online (especially from racists and those who are fatphobicr). And when one of the judges of the show (Padma, who is also a woman of color and Shireen’s hero) tries to be a resource for her in dealing with that, it also makes things get worse. In her own words, “The thing is I don’t know what felt worse. The abusive tweets coming from strangers or the fact that nobody seemed to care about them. That even Niamh didn’t seem to care about them.”

Last but certainly not least, all of the food references in this show made me hungry. I loved how descriptive the author got with all of the flavors in each dish. I also appreciated the acknowledgement that different cultures can have their own way of making something. Shireen using her Ammu’s recipe was another way of acknowledging her culture and heritage, and I was so excited as a reader to see that. It was reminiscent of my own grandmother passing down her recipes to the family, or how my own family came together to gift my older sister various family recipes ahead of her wedding.

Overall, this was a great read. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy The Great British Bake Off, young adult contemporary stories, and sapphic romances. While this is my first book by Adiba, I’m definitely hoping to read more in the future.

Thank you to @guccinary97, @Tearexanne, and @24hryabookblog for making this such a fun buddy read for me. Looking forward to reading The Scarlet Alchemist by Kylie Lee Baker with you next!

REVIEW Go Luck Yourself (Royals and Romance #2) by Sara Raasch

Go Luck Yourself (Royals and Romance #2) by Sara Raasch
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: March 11, 2025
Format: eBook (Personal Library, Bookshop.org) + Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Bramble

“In all that writing you used to do about happily ever after,’ Coal continues, ‘did you ever think what being happy would actually feel like?”

The Nightmare before Kissmas by Sara Raasch is a favorite of the holiday themed books I’ve read, and its sequel Go Luck Yourself is no slouch. Audiobook narrator Dylan Reilly Fitzpatrick absolutely knocked it out of the park with his performance in the audiobook. I really felt like he captured both Kris and Loch’s personalities, and brought the book to life on another level.

This book is an enemies to lovers romantic comedy meets mystery, and it's absolutely joyous insanity. From Kris’ lack of ability to hold his liquor, to the Irish method of flirting being ‘talking shite’, I was hooked. While there are some minor similarities to the first book (Kris and Loch are also princes of their holiday, like Coal and Hex), this romance has an entirely different feel. There are silly moments, old timey romance swoon moments, and even some incredibly emotionally deep moments. While I was 100% on the Kris and Loch ‘ship’, I was also invested in the growth of Kris and Coal’s brotherly relationship over the course of the book. As someone who has my own sibling, Coal’s commitment to seeing his brother happy and enjoying life on his own terms was particularly impactful.

Overall, a fantastic novel. I think the author did a great job wrapping up the storyline of the Christmas princes, but I would be absolutely thrilled if there was a third book in this series featuring Iris (and maybe a short story of her sister and the Valentines day prince). I highly recommend this to mature readers who enjoy queer romantic comedies that feature an enemies to lovers romance and pure, joyful shenanigans.

BOOK REVIEW Cruel Winter with You (Under the Mistletoe Collection #1) by Ali Hazelwood

Cruel Winter with You
(Under the Mistletoe Collection #1) by Ali Hazelwood

Rating: 3 Stars
Release Date: November 12, 2024
Format: eBook (Borrowed from Kindle Unlimited)
Publisher: Amazon Original Stories

Cruel Winter with You by Ali Hazelwood, the first book in Amazon Orginal Stories' Under the Mistletoe Collection was a cute and fun holiday novella. Vivienne LaRue was a good narrator who did a great job bringing the story to life. Its a unique spin on childhood best friends to lovers, and I enjoyed it over the course of one sitting.

While the book is short, the plot is gripping. I really wanted to figure out what happened between Jamie and Marc. There's a lot going on in the book, but I enjoyed the romance that’s built over years and how the author touched on the feeling of not being enough. The last scene was quite satisfying, and I felt it wrapped things up nicely in a bow (even though I definitely wanted a bit more). I recommend this book to those looking for a quick and swoony afternoon read (that's included free for all Kindle Unlimited members).

REVIEW Drop, Cover, and Hold On (The Improbable Meet Cute #4) by Jasmine Guillory

Drop, Cover and Hold On (The Improbable Meet Cute #4) by Jasmine Guillory
Rating: 3 Stars
Release Date: January 23, 2024
Format: Audiobook (Kindle Unlimited)
Publisher: Amazon Original Stories

Jasmine Guillory’s addition to The Improbable Meet Cute series, Drop, Cover and Hold On, was a nice read (but didn’t have the same wow factor as some of the other books). I really did like the premise and the storyline (two complete opposites get stuck together in a bakery, courtesy of an earthquake). It’s a cute and flirty interaction that was very relatable, and they have some fun banter as Harris has to make his advances and feelings toward Daisy blatantly obvious as previous gestures went completely over her head (I too, would have probably tried to return and pay for extra pastries that I didn’t buy that mysteriously made their way into my bag). I think my issue with the story was the length. I wanted more of Daisy and Harris - especially getting to see the actual ‘meet cute’ moment (instead of just hearing about it hindsight). Without more meat to the story, the whole miscommunication aspect of their relationship got painfully awkward at times and resolved a bit too quickly for my tastes.

Overall, Drop, Cover and Hold On was an entertaining book for the length. Audiobook narrator Aure Nash did a great job bringing Daisy and Harris’ story to life with their performance. While this book wasn’t my favorite, I’ve been convinced in Ms. Guillory’s writing abilities such that I’ll be checking out her full length novels (she produced a very fun, fast paced story with compelling characters and lots of tropes). If you want a quick read that has things like forced proximity, grumpy x sunshine, and ‘he falls first’ insta love, you should definitely check out this book.

REVIEW Rosie and the Dreamboat (The Improbable Meet Cute #3) by Sally Thorne

Rosie and the Dreamboat (The Improbable Meet Cute #3) by Sally Thorne
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Release Date: January 23, 2024
Format: eBook and Audiobook (Kindle Unlimited)
Publisher: Amazon Original Stories

Rosie and the Dreamboat by Sally Thorne was another cute and short romance novella addition to The Improbable Meet Cute series through Amazon. A little bit more out of the box than the first two books, the story was incredibly well done for something that starts in the middle of the action (a.k.a. focusing only on the meet cute, not necessarily getting to see the full romance play out).

Rosie meets her love interest, dreamboat firefighter Leo, after she gets stuck in a sensory deprivation pod at a spa that won’t open. Since the spa owners refuse to let the firefighters damage their very expensive equipment before trying all other options, Leo is the designated person to keep Rosie calm as she awaits her rescue. Leo is an adorable cinnamon roll of a human being with a great sense of humor, and it was cool to see them get to know each other over the course of the hours she spends locked in that tank without the aid of a physical first impression. The conversation was really meaningful and deep for being such a lighthearted book, and I was invested (like Rosie was) in getting to see what Leo actually looked like. The final scene where they get to see each other face to face was super cute, and well worth the wait.

Overall, this was another great short story, and perfect for those who want something they can finish in an afternoon. I really hope Rosie and Leo get to live happily ever after together!

REVIEW Shadow Dance (Shadow Riders #8) by Christine Feehan

Shadow Dance (Shadow Riders #8) by Christine Feehan
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Release Date: August 22, 2023
Format: eBook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Berkley

Shadow Dance by Christine Feehan was another entertaining addition to the Shadow Riders series. Focusing on a different branch of the Ferraro’s in New York, Geno Ferraro is now center stage as he finds his other half in an unlikely place and an even unlikelier person.

Geno and Amaranthe have a unique relationship. They first meet after Amaranthe is caught in a trap Geno sets, and realizes she is a shadow rider and his shadow wants to connect to hers. As an accomplished shadow rider herself, Amaranthe is used to doing things on her own. However, as a typical Ferraro and alpha male type character who is used to taking care of those in his family, Geno has to balance his need to protect with respecting her independence and her training. The romance is a bit repetitive, mirroring some of what’s present in previous books, but the unraveling mystery was enough to draw me back in when the romance faltered.

While the story is a bit slower paced than other books in the series, and at times does seem like a bit of a transition phase in the larger storyline of the series, it maintains the same level of suspense and action that are present in her other books. I also enjoyed how the family aspect remains a large part of the story. The previous generation of shadow riders were awful humans and even worse parents (which becomes more evident in this book), but this generation of shadow riders is doing their best to keep family at the heart of all that they do. Francesca is still the unquestioned heart of the group, and they are slowly expanding their family one person at a time.

Now that we have moved the action to New York instead of Chicago, I’m curious to see which Ferraro sibling will be the focus next (assuming she doesn’t jump to another branch of the family). I would recommend this series to those who might enjoy a darker set of paranormal romance books that feature family at the center of everything.

REVIEW A Touch of Darkness (Hades x Persephone Saga #1) by Scarlett St. Clair

A Touch of Darkness (Hades x Persephone Saga #1) by Scarlett St. Clair
Rating: 3.5 Stars (or ~4 Stars)
Release Date: May 24, 2019
Format: Audiobook (Library) + eBook (Kindle Unlimited)
Publisher: Bloom Books

With the recent release of the last book in the Hades x Persephone saga by Scarlett St. Clair, I figured it was a good time to go back and revisit the entire series. Starting with A Touch of Darkness, I actually increased my original rating from 3.5 stars to 4 stars, as I really enjoyed the re-read.

In Ms. St. Clair’s world, Persephone knows she is a goddess, but she’s been sheltered her entire life by her mother Demeter and is left unable to access any type of godly power. When she finally convinces her mother to grant her freedom (albeit temporarily and with conditions), she becomes a writer in New Athens working for the local newspaper and hiding her true nature from all of those around her. However, a chance encounter with the Lord of the Underworld at his club ends up changing her life forever.

As a lifelong fan of Greek mythology and a Bookstagrammer, I’ve always loved getting to read retellings of the various myths I already know and love. Hades and Persephone’s story is one of the most famous romances in Greek mythology, and Ms. St. Clair does a great job honoring the original myth while still putting her own unique stamp on it. For example, the setting of New Athens is a location that is modern while still honoring some ancient elements. All of the gods in this book are easily recognizable by their horns (when they aren’t using a glamour). Demeter’s protective nature over Persephone is a hallmark of almost every retelling, and it was nice as a reader to get to see Persephone’s journey from the timid Goddess of Spring towards her eventual fate as the Queen of the Underworld.

The characters were another highlight of this book. As the book is told from Persephone’s perspective, we are getting to learn more about the elusive god of the Underworld at the same time she does. As Thanatos says in the book, “Lord Hades is not in the habit of trying to convince the world he is a good god.” He doesn’t really care much about what others outside of his inner circle think of him, but over time he opens up to Persephone and shows a different side of himself. For example, there’s more to the games he plays with mortals and the deals he makes than initially meets the eye. In addition to the main characters, I also enjoyed the various side characters that make an appearance throughout the book. Demeter is an easy villain to hate, and Hecate was a lot of fun.

Overall, this was an excellent read. I was super engaged throughout the read, and audiobook narrator Meg Sylvan did a great job bringing the story to life with her performance.  I’m excited to work my way through the rest of the series towards the final book, A Touch of Chaos. I would recommend this book to adult romance readers who enjoy books that are retellings of myths and with a little bit of spice in them.

A skeptic and a supernatural being make a crossroads deal to achieve their own ends only to get more than they bargained for in this lively young adult romantic adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of Spell Bound and So This Is Ever After.

Seventeen-year-old Ellery is a non-believer in a region where people swear the supernatural is real. Sure, they’ve been stuck in a five-year winter, but there’s got to be a scientific explanation. If goddesses were real, they wouldn’t abandon their charges like this, leaving farmers like Ellery’s family to scrape by.

Knox is a familiar from the Other World, a magical assistant sent to help humans who have made crossroads bargains. But it’s been years since he heard from his queen, and Knox is getting nervous about what he might find once he returns home. When the crossroads demons come to collect Knox, he panics and runs. A chance encounter down an alley finds Ellery coming to Knox’s rescue, successfully fending off his would-be abductors.

Ellery can’t quite believe what they’ve seen. And they definitely don’t believe the nonsense this unnervingly attractive guy spews about his paranormal origins. But Knox needs to make a deal with a human who can tether him to this realm, and Ellery needs to figure out how to stop this winter to help their family. Once their bargain is struck, there’s no backing out, and the growing connection between the two might just change everything.

★ “Hints of both Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the CW television show Supernatural flavor this tale in Lukens’ hallmark fashion. Notably, in a genre that has recently favored older readers, this story is accessible to teens of all ages. Its broad appeal, engaging pacing, and quest-like plot structure (which features cameos from deities inspired by Greek mythology) create a transition point for younger teens comfortable with Rick Riordan Presents … This beautifully struck balance couples with a unique perspective on genre canon to create a light but nuanced story that will be a joy for teens.”– Booklist, starred review

“Lukens impresses with this romantic adventure starring a skeptic and an excitable liminal being … Lukens’s signature blend of complex yet accessible mythology, queer-normative worldbuilding, and high emotional stakes makes for a compulsively readable tale.”– Publishers Weekly

“An irresistible elixir of romance and suspense.”– Kirkus Reviews

“A nice touch of Midwestern spookiness underlines a tale of classic crossroads bargains, first (and maybe lasting) love, thinly veiled climate anxiety, and chosen family. The mythic and the realistic are well balanced, and the relationships between characters will win over even the most grudging of romantics. Prickly Ellery and fun-loving Knox are an adorable grumpy-sunshine pair, and Ellery’s chaotic cousin and her girlfriend, plus some supernatural figures, round out the background to their world-bridging romance. Largely angst-free, wryly funny, and emotionally satisfying, this novel is tailor-made for a Netflix adaptation.”– BCCB

Ellery closed their eyes. “And what is on the agenda for today?”

“A sleepover.”

Ellery glanced at the window. “It’s, like, ten in the morning.”

Knox shrugged. “Yes. Yes, I know. But it’s freezing out, and I have noticed that you are not a fan of being outside in the cold. Or anywhere really that’s not the apartment.”

“You’re not wrong.”

“Besides, it sounds fun. Staying in for the day. With you.” A blush swept across his cheekbones.

Ellery’s stomach fluttered. Their whole body went hot. “Okay. That’s fine. How do you envision your sleepover?”

Knox grinned. “Movies. Pizza. Ice cream. Doing each other’s makeup? Gossiping? A pillow fight?”

Ellery raised a finger. “Movies, pizza, and ice cream are fair game. I’m horrible at makeup; we’d need Zada for that. I have no gossip, as you and Zada and Charley are the only people I know. And you literally had a concussion last night, so a pillow fight is also out. But we can still make it fun.”

“Sounds great,” Knox said, making jazz hands.

Ellery shook their head and heaved a playful put-upon sigh. They crossed to the kitchen for a glass of water. “I can’t believe I get stuck with the familiar who wants to live out every teen drama fantasy,” they said as they filled their glass from the tap.

Knox laughed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “What? I’m technically a teenager.”

“You’re immortal.”

“So? I’m totally a teenager. I even have the weird adolescent impulses.”

Ellery choked on their drink, wheezing as the water went down the wrong pipe. They plunked their glass on the counter, coughing, eyes watering. “What?” they managed after a few seconds.

Knox’s brow furrowed. “I literally ran away from home. Are you okay? What did you think I meant?”

“Nothing!” Ellery said quickly, mopping up the spilled water. “How about you pick a movie or TV show and we get this party started?”

Ellery disappeared into the hallway and pressed a hand to their thundering heart, mouth open and cheeks flushed. They weren’t going to survive this day if Knox kept saying things like that and acting innocent on top of it.

Zada wasn’t kidding about this crush business. Ellery’s emotions were out of control, but in the wildest, most exhilarating way. A small voice that sounded a lot like Charley reminded Ellery to be careful, that it was called a “crush” for a reason. And, to be fair to the voice, Knox had said something about having a secret last night. But he’d also told Ellery he liked them. And, for once, Ellery wanted to follow Charley’s advice to not make other people’s problems their own. Whatever the secret Knox had, it wasn’t their issue. And instead of worrying about the money they were losing by not working today, Ellery decided they’d enjoy the fact that they had a cute boy who liked them and a rare day off to spend with him. Ellery wanted to bask in the crush. They wanted it so badly.

After Ellery freshened up and changed out of their outfit from the night before into a pair of pajamas—because what else did you wear at a sleepover?—they placed a grocery order that included popcorn and ice cream and all sorts of toppings to go with it. Ellery knew they would be judged for ordering ice cream in the middle of a snow flurry, but well, it’d been snowing for years; there was no way that everyone gave up ice cream just because it was winter.

They went back into the living room and settled by Knox on the couch, feet up on the coffee table. Knox draped a blanket over both of their legs.

“What did you choose?” Ellery asked, hoping their voice came out even and not at all affected by Knox’s proximity.

“This scary television show about teen witches, werewolves, and wyverns,” Knox said, gesturing toward the screen. “Have you seen it?”

“No, I haven’t. But I heard it’s good.”

Knox grinned as he tapped the play button. “Let’s see if they get any of the lore correct.”

The groceries arrived during the second episode, and they paused the show to each make massive ice cream sundaes. After the fourth, Ellery ordered their pizza and made a face when Knox advocated for pineapple, but added it to half anyway.

During the fifth episode, with Knox leaning into their side, Ellery had seen enough. They threw up their hands. “Oh my goddess, don’t trust that guy!” they yelled at the screen. “He’s trying to lure you into the trap. Why are you believing him?”

Knox huffed in amusement. “You really think he’s the bad guy?”

“Of course! All signs point to that dude. He’s totally shady.”

“But he’s been nothing but nice. He’s given her no reason not to trust him.”

Ellery crossed their arms. “No, but she’s naïve to think he doesn’t have an ulterior motive. Blind belief only causes problems. And she’s just setting herself up to be hurt.”

Knox raised his eyebrows. Ellery dropped their hands and scrunched down in the blanket, blushing under Knox’s intense attention.

“I mean, maybe.”

A character screamed onscreen, but Knox didn’t look away from Ellery. “You said your family prays to the goddess, but you didn’t believe me when we first met.”

Ellery debated pulling the blanket completely over their head. “Belief is difficult for me,” they said.

“Why?”

“Because my parents believed, and look where it got them. They prayed and prayed, and their prayers went unanswered. Instead of taking matters into their own hands, they waited for some mystical solution. One that never came. I grew up believing that they knew best because they were the adults, and it hurt when I realized that they didn’t. That I had to be the pragmatic one.”

Knox’s jaw clenched. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault. You said you ran away. I basically did too. I came here to earn money for my family, but that wasn’t the only reason I left. I couldn’t handle it all anymore.”

“Do you think you’ll go back?”

“I don’t know. Maybe? Maybe not. It’s hard to trust them. It’s something that’s bled into my other relationships as well.” “With Charley and Zada.”

Ellery nodded. “I love them both. And I want to trust them when they tell me that they love me too, and that they want me here, or that it doesn’t bother them that I invaded their space. But like I said, it’s difficult.”

“I understand,” Knox said, though he sounded pained. “I know you don’t trust me.”

Oh. “I believe that you are what you say. And I trust that you’ll hold to our bargain.”

Knox frowned. “It’s signed in blood. I have to follow it.”

“I’m sorry,” Ellery hastened to add. “It’s a me thing. It’s not you. I promise. And for the record, I really—”

A knock at the door cut Ellery off, which was fortuitous because Ellery didn’t know how to navigate whatever situation would arise from blurting out their feelings. Especially if what Knox had said in his concussed haze the night prior was true—that he liked Ellery in return.

Ellery scrambled off the couch and opened the door to accept the pizza. They brought it over to the table and handed Knox one of the paper plates stacked on top.

“It’s fine,” Knox said, helping himself to a slice of pineapple pizza. “I understand.”

“Do you?”

“You’ve been hurt by people you loved. It’s made you wary. That’s nothing to apologize for.” He gestured toward the TV. “Just like August refuses to let Manny into the circle yet, because of her cheating ex-boyfriend.”

Ellery huffed in amusement. “Yeah. Something like that.”

Knox smiled. “Hopefully, though, once you get to know someone, you’ll be able to trust them.”

Ellery ducked their head. “I’m trying.”

“Now,” Knox said, settling back onto the couch, “let’s see if this other character is really the bad guy as you say.”

Within the next few episodes, Ellery was proven wrong: the character was not the bad guy, but he did wind up dead, and then undead. Sometime during the last few episodes of season one, Zada waltzed into the apartment and stopped short.

“Well, this is a mess,” she said, eyeing the pizza box, drink glasses, and empty bowls containing remnants of ice cream, pretzels, and popcorn. “Oh,” she said, pointing to the television, “is this that werewolves, witches, and wyverns show? I only made it to episode nine. Which one is this?”

“Eleven, but episode ten was filler,” Ellery said.

“Budge over,” she said, dropping onto the couch, effectively squishing Ellery closer into Knox’s side. Knox was forced to drape his arm over the back of the couch, so Ellery was snug against him. “I can’t believe that one guy wasn’t the evil one,” Zada said, eyes glued to the screen. “Too bad the writers killed him off.”

“He’s an undead now,” Knox offered helpfully. “Episode ten wasn’t completely filler.”

“Oh, awesome.” She jutted her chin at the pizza box. “Do I smell pineapple?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent,” she said, stealing a slice. The episode opened with the characters at a loud house party dancing and drinking from red plastic cups, flashing lights bathing them in different colors, fast music overwhelming the speakers.

“That looks fun,” Knox said. Ellery didn’t miss his wistful tone, and apparently neither did Zada.

“A party?”

“Yes. I don’t think I’ve ever participated in something like that. With humans,” he clarified.

Zada hummed in acknowledgment.

That’s how Charley found them hours later, the three of them huddled together on the couch, Ellery half asleep on Knox’s chest, Zada curled into Ellery’s other side, and Knox with wide eyes watching the final episode of the season.

“What’s this?” she asked.

Zada waved her hand and shushed her. “Almost over, babe.”

“Is this that dragons show?” she asked, squeezing into the tiny space left on the couch. Ellery grunted as Zada knocked in their side, which forced them to squeeze closer into Knox, which was not such a hardship.

“Wyverns,” Knox corrected.

“Oh, I wanted to watch this,” she said, settling in.

“Spoilers, babe. This is the last episode.”

Charley shrugged. “No worries. I’ll watch from the beginning later.”

Ellery lifted their head. “You are literally chaos in human form, aren’t you?”

Charley beamed. “You’re just now realizing?”

Knox and Zada shushed them both as the episode reached its climax. Five minutes later, they all stared at the screen. Knox’s mouth hung open.

“That’s it?”

“They didn’t reveal the killer,” Zada said in disbelief. She gestured at the screen. “And they left Grant stuck in the cave with Manny, and it’s about to be a full moon!”

“And Pala doesn’t know their magic won’t work against the wyverns and is walking straight into a nest,” Knox said. “Ugh.” He jabbed the off button on the remote. “Cliffhangers are so disappointing.”

“Well,” Charley said gently. “I heard it was renewed for a season two. That’s good news, right?”

“Unless it’s filming right now, it won’t air anytime soon,” Zada said, bottom lip in a pout, arms crossed over her chest. “And Knox . . .” She trailed off.

Knox’s body went taut under Ellery. Ellery peeled themself from where they’d been draped over him.

“Oh,” Zada said, hand over her mouth. “I didn’t—”

“It’s okay,” he said with a forced smile. “Anyway, at least the show has given me an idea,” he added, rubbing his hands together, “for my next human experience.”

Ellery’s heart sank, because they already knew. “A party?” they hazarded.

Knox grinned. “A party.”
