Dark Memory is the latest installment in Christine Feehan’s Dark series, and I’m really loving the series arc featuring the tarot card users and the ancients of the monastery. I was happy to dive into Petru and Safia’s very unique love story, as this is another action packed book filled with suspense, romance, and great worldbuilding.  

Similar to all of the other books in the series and specifically the other books featuring ancients of the monastery, Petru has been searching for his lifemate for thousands of years. Unlike the other male leads, however, Petru actually found an incarnation of his life mate long ago. When faced with an impossible choice (that I don’t want to spoil) he found himself unable to save her and forced to wait until she was born into a new body to find her again. Once he does find her in Safia, he’s surprised to see that she’s a fierce warrior and protector of her people. I really appreciated seeing how he embraced all of her wholeheartedly and was so determined to give her what he could (i.e. a marriage in the ways of her people, more time with her family) since he could not afford to wait to claim her once they met. The more modern partnerships where each life mate balances each other have been my favorite parts of the recent Dark series books, and I hope that trend continues in the future. 

With the last couple of books in the series (starting with Dark Tarot), Ms. Feehan has been building a major storyline with ‘the Beast’, the four gateways and those who guard them. Compared to some of the other storylines (i.e. the mages, the lycans) I have been really engaged with devouring every detail about what’s going on with Justice. There’s another major detail revealed about the importance of tarot cards in this book, so I’m excited to see the eventual climax where Justice makes his play to escape. I really hope it happens soon, and that we get to see cameos from all of the gatekeepers and keepers of the tarot card decks when it does. 

Overall, another great book from Christine Feehan. Jim Frangione did a great job bringing Safia and Petru’s perspectives to life with his performance in the audiobook. I look forward to the next installment featuring the final gate guardian and tarot card user, and getting to see Benedek (and hopefully Nicu’s) lifemate. Any adult readers who are fans of the paranormal romance genre and love great worldbuilding and the fated mate trope would likely enjoy this series. For the best reading experience, I would recommend reading the books of the Dark series in order. However, each book is written such that it largely stands on its own (you do miss some minor context details) and you could start wherever you’d like if one book appeals to you more than others.

Sierra Simone’s The Fae Queen’s Captive, the sixth and final book in the Peculiar Tastes series, was another stellar installment to the Shadow Market universe. If you enjoy paranormal romances with heavy fae influences, a sapphic love story, and unique worldbuilding then I think you should check this book out. 

By day, Janneth Carter is an archaeologist working on another dig site in Scotland and finishing her graduate degree. However, despite her seemingly fulfilling job and life, she’s always wanted more. On Samhain, after investigating mysterious strangers at their dig site, she finds out she may have bitten off more than she can chew as she’s whisked away to the Faerie realm and to the court of the illustrious Stag Queen.

I was expecting this book to be much more like the others in the series; a paranormal romance full of explicit sex scenes with action that progresses very quickly from the first page to the last. However, despite there being no shortage of sexual counters (faeries in the Stag Court love their orgies), I was surprised to see that there’s also a sense of explored vulnerability. Janneth has always been told that her wants were wrong or made to feel lesser by those she’s been intimate with. The Stag Queen Morgana has taken up the heavy burden of being queen after the recent passing of her mother, and if you’ve seen the artwork released for the Kickstarter you’ll know that she has a very obvious physical vulnerability. Janneth and Morgana’s relationship delves into these issues, with it overall being very body positive and emotionally tender. The ending of the book was fairly predictable after reading the other stories in the series (especially The Death God’s Sacrifice), but I appreciated it nonetheless (and wasn’t too bothered by the predictability)

Ms. Simone went for it with all of the faerie references in building the world within her book, and I was practically giddy while reading because of it. I liked seeing hints of the different courts within the Faerie realms and the references to the Faerie tradition of stealing mortals and keeping them as playthings; both children and adults. I was also quite impressed to see the references to mortal interpretations of faerie stories that she included (which helped tie in Janneth’s profession to the story). 

There is shared worldbuilding between the different Peculiar Tastes/Shadow Market books, but there is little to no crossover between characters. I did enjoy the tiny Easter Egg-esque nods to the other books. For example, the druid who raises the veil every year so the Shadow Market can happen is a common reference in the book (a nod to The Death God’s Sacrifice). There are also some moments in the book that seem to reference characters from The Captive Merman’s Promise and The Demon’s Bargain. 

Overall, The Fae Queen’s Captive was another short enjoyable paranormal romance/fantasy tale. It didn’t quite have the plot twists that some of the other books had, and I’m still saddened by the fact that all the books in the series are so short, but it was an entertaining read nonetheless. I’m so excited that the Shadow Market books have introduced me to some new authors I’ve never heard of before (I was previously only familiar with Katee Robert), and it makes me excited to check out Sierra Simone’s back-list as well as the upcoming Dangerous Tides kickstart in the near future.

Nineve Blackmoore, or Nina, has been out of sorts ever since her fiance broke things off about a year ago. In an effort to cheer her up and get her back to normal, her best friend suggests she go on another date; no strings attached, with someone she’d never normally consider, just to get back in the swing of things. Enter Morty Gutierrez, the non-binary owner of The Shamrock Cauldron. Things end up going haywire on the first date though, and Nina and Morty are forced to work together to figure out why Nina’s magic has suddenly started to go haywire and what they’re going to do with their budding witch bond. 

I absolutely loved Lana Harper’s first two books in The Witches of Thistle Grove series, Payback’s a Witch and From Bad to Cursed. I had high hopes for Back in a Spell. It’s the first book in the series to feature a Blackmoore front and center, the romance is pansexual, and the love interest is non-binary. The book was an interesting and engaging read, but there were a couple of issues that prevented me from giving the book a full five stars. 

First of all, there were a lot of things happening all at once. A large chunk of the story focuses on Nina’s self-discovery and breaking away from the toxicity of her family, but the actual interactions with her abusive mother and grandmother are fairly limited. I felt I was missing a lot of context as a reader. As a result of the missing context, the victory and the growth Nina achieves at the end of the story don’t feel as earned. There was also a lot of development for the worldbuilding of Thistle Grove and its magic - some of the references the author brought in were really cool, and sent me down a rabbit hole of internet searches and extra reading. Sadly, I think the reveals lost a lot of their potential impact with all the other stuff going on since readers didn’t have a chance to just sit and absorb them. Finally, there’s the romance with Morty - somehow Nina’s brother Gareth got more on page time than the actual love interest. When Morty was on the page, the lust between the two was evident but other relationship aspects felt unauthentic. For example, I can get behind instant love/lust but I didn’t really get why Morty went from zero to sixty with their opinion on Nina’s family. 

One specific aspect of Morty and Nina’s relationship I wanted to touch on was the non-binary representation (which I think a lot of other readers and reviewers have noted as well). This was seemingly a big aspect of the marketing surrounding the book, and the author makes a point of including a moment where Morty shares their pronouns (he/they) early on in the story. However, from that moment on it seems like everyone only uses he or other masculine descriptions for Morty. It was almost like the fact that Morty is non-binary stops being a thing from that moment on. The execution of this particular plot point left a lot to be desired. 

Back in a Spell is an enjoyable witchy read, with some highlights like the new witchy lore being introduced and Nina’s journey of self-discovery. However, readers looking for a paranormal romance similar to the first two books might be better off waiting for the next installment, In Charm’s Way, which seems to tease a new twist to all the happenings in Thistle Grove.

REVIEW Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Having initially been introduced to Adrienne Young’s work through her Fable series, I was excited to learn that she would be releasing her standalone adult debut, Spells for Forgetting in 2022. The two literary universes are vastly different, with Fable being more of an action and adventure fantasy and Spells for Forgetting sitting firmly in the contemporary magical realism genre (akin to Practical Magic). However, despite the differences, I think Emery and August’s love story will capture just as many hearts as Fable and West’s did. 

The story takes place on Saoirse Island, which is just as much a part of the story as any of the physical characters. Years ago, there was a fire in the orchard and a death that rocked everybody on the island. They thought the event had been put behind them long ago, but when August Salt returns to the island for the first time in over a decade, long-buried secrets come to light (and no one has their hands clean). 

In terms of vibe, the book is a cross between Knives Out and Practical Magic. Lily Morgan’s death sits at the heart of the story, and while August has long been the main suspect readers quickly come to learn there's more to the story. While it did make things confusing at times, I enjoyed getting more perspectives than just Emery and August’s as it helped fully flesh out the case. It was fun to get to play the role of detective and put all the puzzle pieces together. 

While I was reading, I admittedly struggled with the non-linear storyline (it can be very hit or miss for me in books). I want to note that I appreciated how each chapter gave readers a note on where it takes place chronologically compared to the rest of the story. Thankfully, I pushed through my struggles and was rewarded at the end of the book with the secrets of the island and Lily’s death being unraveled. 

Audiobook lovers are in for a treat with this book. Spells for Forgetting is a full-cast audiobook production, and narrators Emily Rankin, Dan Bittner, Mark Deakins, Kimberly Farr, Ari Fliakos, Dawn Harvey, Carrington MacDuffle, Kirsten Potter, and Oliver Wyman did an excellent job with bringing the story to life.  

Readers who enjoy multiple points of view, small-town murder mysteries, and second-chance romances with a hint of magic involved will enjoy Adrienne Young’s debut adult novel. If you are like me and struggle with non-linear storytelling (especially for a mystery), I highly recommend reading a print version of the book as you listen to the audiobook. It makes it easier to follow along with what’s going on.

The Captive Merman’s Promise by Zoey Castile (the pen name Zoraida Cordova uses when writing romance) is a unique novella-length tale with a strong premise. A sort of loose reimagining of The Little Mermaid, Amada is a young bruja looking to break a curse that has plagued her family for generations. When she arrives at the Shadow Market and seeks out the Grand Master of the Abyss, she’s surprised to find merman warrior Ronan locked in a tank. Their chemistry is instantaneous, but Ronan’s existing bargain with the Grand Master (and Amada’s pending one) become a barrier to their happily ever after. 

Unlike some of the other couples in the Peculiar Tastes series, I struggled to become invested in Amada and Ronan’s story. Sure, it’s a classic taste of insta-love and steamy sex scenes. However, I didn’t really get enough background for either of them to care about whether or not they got a happily-ever-after ending. A full-length story (instead of a novella-length book) would have been better in this case, as it would have allowed time to go into the history of the curse as well as develop their relationships more. I wanted to learn more about the Grand Master! I wanted to learn more about Ronan’s background, and Amada’s family. Sadly, there wasn’t enough time to do everything in the pages provided and the story as a whole suffered as a result. 

The highlight of the book was the dynamic of Amada and Ronan’s relationship. Both of them are lost and in bad situations when they run into each other, and they’ve both given up on the ability to find love at this point. It was nice to see characters that don’t start out as confident and to see a relationship where it doesn’t involve one party saving the other. Despite this being a monster romance of sorts, I also appreciated how their intimacy didn’t rely on rutting or animalistic behavior you see in other similar books. It was more of a gentle relationship, and it fits their characters and what we know of their backstories well. 

Overall, The Captive Merman’s Promise was another short enjoyable monster romance book. It wasn’t quite long enough to be fully satisfying, but it does the job and it's an easy book to knock out in an afternoon. I still have two more books to go in the Shadow Market/Peculiar Tastes series, so I’m excited to read some other new to me authors. If you’re looking for a quick and easy mermaid monster romance, this one's for you. However, if you’re looking for a more in-depth tale (complete with lots of worldbuilding and character development), I’d suggest looking at the other books from this Kickstarter (especially The Demon’s Bargain and The Death God’s Sacrifice).

REVIEW of The Last Minute First Lady by Tinia Montford

Indie published books have the opportunity to be hidden gems, and Tinia Montford’s The Last Minute First Lady was one of my first entertaining reads of 2023. Cassian Anders is one of the hottest new things to hit the political circuit, and he’s a hair's breadth away from clinching the Illinois governor’s seat. One of the only issues? Voters don’t want to put their faith in a young unmarried politician like him. Enter Jolie Coldwell, an up and coming investigative reporter looking for her big break. The two make a deal to advance both of their interests, and must convince everyone of their fake love affair until after the ballots are counted. Sounds easy enough, right?

The political aspect of this book was a major part of the story. However, I was more intrigued to learn about Jolie’s side of things than Cassian’s. It was fun to get to see the election cycle from her perspective as an investigative reporter. A lot of time, effort, and research goes into all of those 500 words or less articles. It was exciting to get to see Jolie go after her leads with such determination and passion. She’s such a headstrong character that she keeps everyone on their toes, and I appreciated seeing her stick to her guns no matter how others tried to influence her reporting. I was also quite amused by her verbal sparring with Cassian’s staff, and how she proved those who only see her as arm candy wrong.

One of the only drawbacks for the book was the romance. I struggled to connect to Jolie and Cassian’s relationship, and I sadly never became invested in their romance. I did enjoy how realistic their relationship was - none of the big moments were ever picture perfect (think the opposite of a Hallmark movie). I’m also quite happy to see two strong BIPOC characters take center stage in a romance novel - I’m not sure if it was intentional on the author’s part, but they reminded me a bit of Barack and Michelle Obama. However, I think the storyline lost me with the two major tropes of marriage of convenience and forced proximity. When the two are combined, I’ve come to expect a lot of fake public displays of affection and off the cuff romantic moments. There was so much potential for that with the fake fiance situation. However, that didn’t really happen as much as I’d hoped in this book. Unfortunately, the missed expectations negatively impacted my overall enjoyment of the read and lowered the overall star rating. 

Overall, this was an enjoyable book with a lot of humor and heart. If you like adult romance novels with a bit of steam and a happily ever after that are closer to reality than a Hallmark movie, you’ve come to the right place. I especially appreciate the inclusion of a successful black couple at the heart of the story.

She is a world traveler having climbed a volcano in Nicaragua, scaled Angkor Wat in the blistering sun, and roamed the Acropolis of Athens. Oh, she also dabbles in short stories occasionally.

If you can’t catch her writing, you can bet she’s overindulging on poke bowls, listening to the same four songs, or chilling with her adorbs doggie. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Fiction.
