About the Book

Glitching between dimensions wasn't supposed to be my life, but sometimes you have to dance with the darkness.

I should be dead. Shot twice through the chest. But the Embassy saved me because I’m a one-of-a-kind freak who blips to worlds they can’t reach. Now I’m their personal mule, raiding collapsing planets to fatten their coffers. Lucky me.

And things have gone from bad to worse. My old team is being held hostage, my family’s in danger, and the darkness hunts me across realities. My one shot to end this living hell? Take down the Embassy, save Charlie, and torch the whole rotten system. Simple, right? One misstep though, and we’re toast. Alien breach. Apocalypse. End scene.

If I fail, the darkness won’t stop until it swallows us whole.

Excerpt from the Book

Heaviness blankets me. A childish part of me wanted to hang onto the idea that I was an instrumental part of saving the universe. More than that though, I’d hoped that Cory slipped me his wedding ring so he could save me. For a single stupid moment, I thought this was about me. Why do I keep doing this? Falling for the idea that people care about me for who I am and not what I can do for them? The only people who loved me like that are my family, and I can’t ever reach them again without inadvertently siccing the darkness on them. I take a deep, hollow breath before asking, “What do you want, Cory?”

Music Playlist for the Dark Walker Series

Thanks so much for having me on the blog! I really appreciate the chance to reach new readers. When I saw that one of your post subject ideas was a playlist for the books, I latched right on. I live in a noisy household full of boys who like to listen to sports at full volume and birds who sing at the top of their lungs so I spend most of my writing time with a set of headphones on bobbing my head as I write. My generic playlist mostly consists of instrumental music that sounds like the epic soundtrack for some movie trailer. There’s some though, that really resonated for me while I was writing Seed, book 3 in the Dark Walker series. So I’ve plunked them into a Dark Walker Series Playlist. Feel free to click and listen away. What are your go-to songs or playlists, people? I’d love to hear all about them. Thanks for letting me share a bit about the soundtrack that’s playing in my head while I write! Really appreciate the support. Keep feeding your imagination!

Cheers,

Shelly

About the Author

At a young age, Shelly Campbell wanted to be an air show pilot or a pirate, possibly a dragon and definitely a writer and artist. She’s piloted a Cessna 172 through spins and stalls, and sailed up the east coast on a tall ship barque—mostly without projectile vomiting. In the end, Shelly found writing and drawing dragons to be so much easier on the stomach. Shelly writes speculative fiction ranging from grimdark fantasy, to sci-fi and horror. She’d love to hear from you.

Bitroux: High Country by Jordan Harcourt-Hughes Tour Schedule (Goddess Fish Promotions)

About the Book

If Merouac ever thought his life’s work would culminate in leading the metal workshops of the Transcontinental Railroad Project, he was sorely mistaken.

Now, his true challenge lies in navigating the other-worldly abilities he’s only beginning to understand—abilities that allow him to tune metal to interdimensional frequencies.

While trying to be a guardian to his niece, Evra, he’s realising she may have more to teach him than he ever expected. At the same time, his decision to help an interdimensional race find refuge underground puts him at the centre of an even deeper mystery.

As reality reshapes itself around him, Merouac faces a growing realisation: the world of Ahm is on the brink of a profound transformation, and everything he thought he knew may soon be shattered.

Excerpt

‘Well, yes,’ said Asta, reaching for the larg urn of water in the centre of the makeshift table. ‘Oh, thank you, Merouac,’ she smiled when he lifted the urn and poured water into her wooden cup for her. ‘Planets are living things. They have their own journeys to take as well. The shield is fading because Ahm is shedding its own protective layer.’

‘And once the shield has completely gone?’

‘Then Ahm will be part of the Broadsphere,’ confirmed Asta in a matter-of-fact way. ‘As we are here. And all lines of communication will be open.’

Check out this excerpt!

The Spectrum’s engines roared, providing thrust to power the plane to takeoff speed as it lurched ahead down the runway. The plane’s power was evident as the acceleration force held them in their seats. This plane was designed to go fast, and the cabin was surprisingly quiet. As they hit takeoff speed, Taylor pulled back, and the nose lifted off the ground, followed shortly by the rest of the plane. The landing gear retracted immediately into the fuselage.

The passengers quietly stared out the large porthole windows as the Goose climbed out of Tucson. It was almost dusk, and Lukas spotted thousands of saguaro cacti dotting the sides of mountains that cast distorted shadows that looked like goblins. The exhilarating views captivated everyone. That is, for everyone except Donna, who sat rigid in her seat, hands clenched and her eyes squeezed shut. Lukas shot her a thumbs up in thanks to Donna—already not a fan of flying, but all in for a fifteen-hour flight halfway around the world just to support her friend. The plane’s angle leveled off, and soon Taylor emerged from the cockpit, curious how well the passengers had settled into their home for the next fifteen hours. Linda and Betty had their eyes shut, as Donna distracted herself with her laptop.

Taylor walked back to the crew stateroom for a few minutes. He and Diego had a brief conversation before Diego walked up to the cockpit. Lukas moved toward the back of the plane to set up his inflight internet connection and workspace. Linda and Betty awoke, startled and disoriented after their brief power nap, while Donna adjusted their seats to face each other, a small table between them. Betty remarked that it reminded her of a train.

“How’re you doing?” Taylor asked Lukas.

“Just trying to get set up here. I’ve got a lot of work to do on the way to Dubai. I need to connect with my team in Croatia to get some data and ideas on how I can get this ransom together. It’s still early morning there, so I’ll wait a few hours.”

“Why don’t you get some sleep until then?” Taylor suggested. I’m gonna try to myself. You mind?” Taylor pointed to the empty seat next to Lukas.

“Of course not.” Lukas stood to let him in. Taylor sat and reclined his seat. “I changed my mind. I’ll let the kids do the first leg, then I’ll replace one of them, and we rotate like that.”

Lukas saw that his mom and her friends were already starting to doze off, no doubt tired from the frenetic day. “Why don’t you sleep with me?” Taylor said, and then caught himself. “I mean not with me but next to me—you know what I mean. You make me all tongue-tied, Dr. Halloran.”

“Sure, I could use a nap. I’m relieved we’re finally on our way.” Lukas reclined his seat to the same angle as Taylor’s. The cabin was mostly dark, except for the LED accent lights that glowed a cool blue.

Taylor reached out and touched Lukas’ hand. “Is this okay?” He then intertwined his fingers with Lukas’. “This is better than okay. Sleep tight.” Lukas raised their joined hands and kissed the back of Taylor’s. Pretty soon, their hands were on each other’s thighs.

Heat rose from Taylor’s athletic legs.

Despite the sadness, stress, and emotion of this week, Lukas appreciated the kind soul sleeping next to him. As he was resting, Lukas suddenly felt a rush of panic. What am I doing? Random memories of Drew raced through his head as he tried to calm himself. He tried to rationalize his thoughts. Yes, I just met this guy. Yes, I promised myself I’d never get hurt again. But he’s such a nice man. What if he’s psycho? He pulled his hand away from Taylor and eventually calmed his mind and drifted off to sleep. When Lukas woke up, he noticed his mother sitting with her eyes open, staring at nothing, either deep in thought or terrified of something. Lukas walked over to her. “Ma, are you doing okay?”

“I think I’m okay. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“I know. This has got to be tough for you...” “Honey, I’m not talking about your father. Of course, I’m concerned about him, but it’s only a matter of time until we can see him, hopefully.”

The Goblin King's Mischief by D. Lieber (Goddess Fish Promotions Tour Schedule)

About the Book

A promise unkept. A love she can’t forget. This wily human will do anything to reclaim the heart of the Goblin King.

Lady Melody Piobaire never lost faith her first love would come for her when she was forced from his side. That is, until she finds out he doesn’t even know who she really is…doesn’t even know she’s human. To make things worse, she’s the promised mistress of the sidhe king. Rather than bear Tir’s heir, she devises a plan to win back her true love in the most goblin of ways.

Orphaned elf Aodh never forgot what it was like growing up on the mean streets of Goblintown. And now, as Goblin King, he’s dedicated to being the just and attentive ruler the neglected goblins deserve. So when a spoiled human who knows nothing of what it means to be a goblin tricks him into marriage, he’ll do anything to be rid of her.

Melody is certain she can win Aodh’s heart again, so she isn’t prepared for his hot and cold hostility. Aodh is unsettled by the forward human in his home and the way she seems to know just how to get to him.

What can Melody do if her only love no longer wants her, or worse, no longer exists?

Excerpt

His blush deepened. “Help me by being my goblin queen.”

Heat bloomed on my cheeks and neck—even my ears felt hot. I could hardly hear my voice over the sound of my pounding heart. “Is this a marriage proposal?” I tried to make my voice light, but I didn’t quite pull it off.

He dropped his eyes to the little bit of space between us. “I mean, you must like me at least a little. You’ve kept coming around these last few months after all.” His nonchalant tone was much more convincing than mine had been.

Disappointment wiggled its way into my heart, but it made my lie much smoother. “Yes, to buy potion ingredients.”

His expression sagged a little, and hope pushed the disappointment aside. “W-well, you did kiss me that time.”

I could see it now, and I smiled while my heart rang as a bell struck. “Yes, to thank you for saving me.”

All of his confidence, his bravado, crumbled away as he turned his gaze back to the dispersing crowd.

“Do you know what you’re asking me to put aside?” I wondered aloud.

“I’m sure your parents have picked some rich and powerful sidhe out for you,” he said bitterly. “Is that what you want?” His question was quiet, uncertain.

Thoughts of guilt toward my family and Lorccán were long forgotten. My hand trembled when I reached out and rested it on his, and his eyes flicked to mine.

“They have. But even so, when you become the goblin king, I’ll be your goblin queen,” I murmured.

Excerpt

I may be small, but I am fierce. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Over and over again. Fierce.

“Charyeot,” the taekwondo tournament referee says in Korean. Attention.

I snap my arms to my sides.

“Kyeong-nae,” the ref says. Bow.

I turn to face my opponent, Dax Washington. His dark skin glistens with sweat. We dip our heads.

I look up to see Dax towering over me, his eyes stormy.

It suddenly occurs to me how much “fierce” sounds like “fears.” Not that I’m scared or anything. I’m not.

“Sijak!” The ref throws up his hand. Begin! Immediately Dax’s large fists hammer down like a hailstorm.

Well, maybe I’m a little worried.

Dax lunges. I block his front kick with my forearm. I flinch and reel back. The ref blows his whistle, but Dax doesn’t stop. I barely have time to move before—oof—another kick nails me in the elbow.

Okay, fine. I’m totally panicking

The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts: Book Giveaway

About the Book Series

The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts

Written by Erika Lewis

A 2023 Teacher Favorites Winner (6th-8th Grade) for the Children's Book Council

Brimming with Celtic mythology, action, and danger, Erika Lewis's Kelcie Murphy and The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts introduces readers to a new kind of magical school and a warrior who must choose with which side of an epic battle her destiny will lie.

The Otherworld is at war. The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts trains warriors. And Kelcie Murphy―a foster child raised in the human world―is dying to attend.

A place at AUA means meeting Scáthach, the legendary trainer of Celtic heroes. It means learning to fight with a sword. It means harnessing her hidden powers and―most importantly―finding out who her parents are, and why they abandoned her in Boston Harbor eight years ago.

When Kelcie tests into the school, she learns that she’s a Saiga, one of the most ancient beings in the Otherworld. Secretive, shunned, and possessed of imposing elemental powers, the Saiga are also kin to the Otherworld's most infamous traitor.

But Kelcie is a survivor, and she’ll do whatever it takes to find her parents and her place in their world. Even if that means making a few enemies.

REVIEW Kelcie Murphy and the Academy for the Unbreakable Arts (The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts #1) by Erika Lewis

Rating: 4 Stars

Release Date:

Format: Audiobook (Library)

Publisher: Starscape

Check out my review of the second book in the series, Kelcie Murphy and the Hunt for the Heart of Danu!

Erika Lewis’ Kelcie Murphy and the Academy for the Unbreakable Arts was an action packed and fun middle grade fantasy read. Brimming with fantastical elements and references to Celtic mythology, Kelcie is thrust into the magical world with no knowledge after living for the past eight years in the human realm. She has to work quickly to catch up to her peers, and make sure that she earns an invitation back to the Academy for her second year (or risk losing her connection to the Otherworld forever).

Kelcie was a very relatable character. After finding out she’s not a regular human orphan, she’s desperate to know more about her family and why she was sent away. At the same time, she has to learn how to control her immensely strong elemental powers and make friends with her teammates (the members of her ‘Fiana’). There’s a lot of mystery surrounding her heritage, and it was really fun to get to see her bonds with her friends evolve. I especially liked Niall, and how his disability was displayed in the book (Everyone else in the world had an extra hand compared to Niall’s one, which was a notable comment in the book). While there is a magical element to their challenges, at the end of the day the foursome is just a group of kids trying to make it through the school year. You have bullies, you have strict teachers, and you have impossible gym classes (this time compounded by magical powers and weapons).

The Celtic mythology was a really unique aspect of the book. I loved the world building in the book and how we got to learn about things with Keclie. With listening to the audiobook, it’s really hard to know how certain things are spelled but I had fun looking things up and getting to learn even more tidbits. Scathach was very intense as the sort of ‘headmaster’ for the academy, but she does care about her pupils and is very good at her job. Surprisingly, as compared to other books like the Percy Jackson series, individual gods are not mentioned all that much but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Justis Golding did an excellent job bringing the story to life with her performance in the audiobook narration. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy authors like Rick Riordan, Tamora Pierce, or Dhonielle Clayton. After the ending of the book, I’m really excited to see what’s next for Kelcie and her friends in the sequel, Kelcie Murphy and the Hunt for the Heart of Danu.
