City of Thorns by CN Crawford is a paranormal fantasy romance featuring a sexy demon lord who imprisons the heroine after mistaking her for a succubus from his past. Rowan, our MC, has been determined to enter the City of Thorns (the demon’s city) ever since her mother was killed. After Orion (the Lord of Chaos) realizes his mistake by tasting Rowan’s blood and deeming her a mortal, they make a deal. Rowan will masquerade as the demoness Orion mistook her for and gather secrets for him. In return, Orion will pay off Rowan’s student loans and help her find her mother’s killer.

The plot gets much better as you get deeper into the book (the beginning starts out a bit slow). Not a ton of smut in City of Thorns, but I think the relationship between Rowan and Orion needed to be set up so there’s room for the steam level to go up in the next book.

Rowan’s quirky nature made City of Thorns very entertaining. I was amused at how she applied her knowledge as a psychology student to her masquerade as Mortana and her dealings with the demons. Orion, on the other hand, has a certain lethal nature and snarkiness to him, but he definitely starts to care about Rowan during the course of the story. There are a LOT of questions left unanswered about his past and his reasonings but it has just convinced me that I need to read the next book even more!

I recommend this book to all lovers of paranormal romance. In terms of audience level, I would place it in either adult or new adult. I can’t wait to read more in the Demon Queen Trials series (Lord of Embers should be out later this year per the author’s pages). I’m really hoping that the author includes more backstory on the war between the humans and the demons in the next book, as I’d love to learn more about what happened in that particular conflict.
