REVIEW Wrath of the Triple Goddess by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Wrath of the Triple Goddess by Rick Riordan

Rating: 5 Stars

Release Date: September 24, 2024

Format: Audiobook (Personal Library) + Hardcover (Barnes and Noble Exclusive Edition, Personal Library)

Publisher: Disney Hyperion

I never thought we would get a Halloween novel for the Percy Jackson series, but it’s here and it's a bunch of zany fun. Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Wrath of the Triple Goddess, the second book in Percy’s quest to get three recommendation letters for college, was a blast to the past as the original trio worked to earn Hecate’s favor. Jesse Bernstein once again did an excellent job bringing the story to life with his performance in the audiobook narration.

Housesitting a goddesses’ pets sounds simple on paper, but of course with the triple goddess herself things get very complicated very quickly. It was a spooky, nostalgic ride, with many cameos from various characters from the series as well as other figures from mythology. While this series already has my heart, my favorite moment in the book was a heartfelt exchange between Percy and his mom Sally. Overall, it was a great read (though that’s no surprise) and I’m really excited to see who the third god providing Percy a recommendation letter will be.

I recommend the series to those who enjoy adventure, humor, and Greek mythology. Readers should absolutely read the original books (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, and The Trials of Apollo) before reading this book and The Chalice of the Gods for the best experience.

REVIEW The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1) by Rick Riordan

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1) by Rick Riordan
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: June 28, 2005
Format: Audiobook
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

With the recent release of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show, I was inspired to go back and read The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (aka the book that started it all) for the first time in years and for the first time in audiobook format. It felt like coming home and seeing an old friend after years of being apart. I still think it’s a great book for readers of all ages, as anyone can find something they can relate to in this book. For me personally, I’ve always connected with the fresh takes on Greek mythology stories and figures, the humor (Seaweed Brain at his finest), and with the authentic relatability (even for a novel that is heavily based in fantasy). It’s also interesting for me to come back to this book as an adult, because when I initially read it for the first time as a child I hadn’t actually been diagnosed with ADHD yet but I knew I connected with Percy’s experience and feeling like his brain was broken so much.

Overall, I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone but I highly recommend it (one of my favorite series of all time). Narrator Jesse Bernstein did a great job bringing the perspective of Percy and the other characters to life with his performance in the audiobook. I look forward to re-reading all of the other books in the series (and the larger Percy Jackson and the Olympians universe) as soon as I am able.

REVIEW The Chalice of the Gods (Percy Jackson and the Olympians Universe) by Rick Riordan

The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: September 26, 2023
Format: Audiobook (Libro.fm) and Hardcover (Personal Library)
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

“I am a guy of limited talents. If I can’t kill it with water, a sword or sarcasm, I am basically defenseless”.

Rick Riordan’s most recent release, The Chalice of the Gods, is the first book to feature the complete original trio since The Lightning Thief came out in 2005, and it was an equal mix of reminiscing and being excited for the future of the series. After saving the world multiple times and defeating countless monsters, Percy Jackson is facing a more mundane obstacle in applying for college. However, it’s not going to be as easy as it seems, as the gods are requiring him to get three divine recommendation letters and complete three new quests to do so.

I thought that I knew about most of the creatures and beings from Greek mythology, but Rick Riordan keeps bringing out different elements to surprise readers. It was fun to get to learn more about the different gods who appear in the book. It was also fun to get to see some of the mythical creatures he teases in the book (specifically, the chickens and the snakes). There’s even some surprise interactions with Athena and Poseidon, Annabeth and Percy’s parents that left me quite amused and excited for future installments (and to see Percy finally get into college).

I didn’t realize it until it came up in the book tour events, but this is the first time in a long time that Percy, Annabeth and Grover have gone on a quest together with just the three of them. In The Sea of Monsters, Grover was lost on the search for Pan and not on the quest. In The Titan’s Curse, Annabeth was taken. And in the books since The Battle of the Labyrinth, they’ve always been doing quests with other people or fighting in major battles. As a die-hard fan of the Percy Jackson universe, it was heartwarming and nostalgic to go back to the beginning, especially since we’ll be seeing a slightly different version of the trio back in action once the Disney+ adaptation comes out in December 2023.

Overall, another excellent book from Rick Riordan. I’m excited to see what's in store for our favorite trio in the next book, The Wrath of the Triple Goddess (set to release in Fall of 2024). Hecate has had some limited appearances in the series so far, so it’s going to be interesting to see what type of quest she (or possibly another god) has in store for Percy.

REVIEW The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro

The Sun and the Star
by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro
Rating: 5 Stars
Release Date: May 2, 2023
Format: Audiobook (Libro.fm) and Hardcover (Personal Library)
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Readers were first introduced to Nico Angelo in 2007 with the release of Rick Riordan’s third installment to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Titan’s Curse, and have witnessed a lot of character growth in the years since. Sixteen years later, Nico has his own story in The Sun and the Star as he and his ‘glow-in-the-dark’ boyfriend Will Solace must journey to the depths of the Underworld and Tartarus itself to save a friend that was left behind and now needs their help.

Given that this is the first book that Rick Riordan has ever co-written, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was quite pleased to see that Rick Riordan’s trademark humor and action pacing are still present in the book. But there’s also an emotional weight and an authentic feel of lived experiences that I think Mark Oshiro brought to the story. In particular, I loved seeing how Nico and Will’s relationship developed throughout the story. And I also loved seeing all the different monsters and immortal beings they ran into along the way.

Compared to other locations within the Percy Jackson universe, readers have not spent all that much time within the Underworld. Even the journey through Tartarus was basically covered by one book. The worldbuilding for this part was really cool, as we get to learn a lot of the ‘rules’ of the Underworld and Tartarus through Will’s eyes. There are so many different things that come up, like the different locations, the different types of spirits (manias were interesting in particular), and even the different gods and goddesses that call that realm home. Both new and old characters make an appearance in the story, and this just felt like a love letter to the series as a whole.

In addition to all the interesting mythology bits that pop up in this book, there’s also a lot of emotional ‘oomph’ to the story. It’s very dark with a lot of heavy stuff being dealt with, but there’s also a ray of hope shining through. You have characters dealing with heavy amounts of past trauma, yet there are also tender moments of love and affection present (and not just from Nico and Will). Our main characters are the embodiment of the grumpy/sunshine trope; despite what I might have expected, it's a very equal relationship, and there are multiple moments where they end up supporting each other. And the scene toward the end of the book where the couple is talking with Piper will probably go down as one of my favorites in the entire series, as it made me cry happy tears.

Overall, this was another fantastic story and a great addition to the larger Percy Jackson literary universe. Rick Riordan has always been one of my favorite authors, and I’m going to check out Mark Oshiro’s backlist of releases as soon as I have some free time. Narrator AJ Beckles also did a great job with his performance in the audiobook.  I think the book will appeal to both new readers and lifelong fans (though it is obviously best geared toward those who are familiar with previous installments to the series). This book has me excited for another return to the world of Percy Jackson in September 2023, when the next Percy Jackson-focused book (Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods) comes out!

About the Book
As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life–literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that’s been the case so far . . .

Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades’s realm. Nico’s dreams and Rachel Dare’s latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico’s mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to “leave something of equal value behind?”

Nico will have to face demons both internal and external as his relationship with Will is tested to the core in this standalone adventure featuring two of the most popular characters in the Percy Jackson saga.

If you have enjoyed any of Rick Riordan’s books or any of the books that have been featured in the Rick Riordan imprint, you should without hesitation pick up The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities: New Stories about Mythic Heroes. This book is a collection of stories that feature many of the characters readers have come to love since the start of the imprint: Aru Shah, Sikander Aziz, Zane Obispo, and more! While most of the stories feature characters that fans of the imprint will already be familiar with, there is one story that focuses on entirely new characters. Rick Riordan's contribution to the book, "My Life as a Child Outlaw" is his first foray into Irish/Celtic mythology. After reading it, I can't wait to see where he will take those characters in a full book-length story.

Each story has its own merits: some are better than others and I think part of that is due to the complexity of the world that the story is based in (some stories with large amounts of worldbuilding simply don’t lend themselves to short stories). For the best reading experience, you should read the other books in the Rick Riordan Presents imprint before reading this book. The stories jump straight into the action and don’t waste any time reintroducing characters most readers will have met before.

Overall, a very fun and entertaining collection of stories. I would happily recommend this book to fans of middle-grade mythology and fantasy action-adventure. I’m excited to read more about Rick Riordan’s take on Irish Mythology, and see where the other authors will go with their characters in the future!

Rick Riordan proved that he is not limited to stories based on fantasy or mythology with his latest book, Daughter of the Deep, a sci-fi tale inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Daughter of the Deep follows Ana Dakkar, a freshman prefect in Harding Pencroft Academy’s Dolphin House. When the unimaginable happens, Ana is forced to lead her classmates and fend off attacks from Harding-Pencroft’s rival school, Land Institute. Will she be able to successfully step into her ancestor’s shoes and come out unscathed on the other end?

There are some similarities between Ana and Percy’s stories. For example, both books have a water theme. Both Ana and Percy are put into positions of leadership because of who they are related to (Captain Nemo and Poseidon respectively). However, the similarities end there. Percy’s adventures are filled with monsters of legend and figures straight out of Greek Myth.  Ana’s adventures, while related to the tales recounted in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island, fall under the umbrella of science fiction and things that could be achieved in the future.

The characters in Daughter of the Deep are quite diverse. Harding-Pencroft’s freshman class and staff come from a variety of backgrounds, faiths, and experiences, and that ends up playing a role in the events of the book. Nothing ever felt thrown in just to check a box. For example, Ester Harding is the first character in one of Rick Riordan’s books to be on the autism spectrum. Rick chose not to focus on what society usually portrays as the “negative” side effects or symptoms of autism. Instead, Rick focused on how Ester’s autism ends up being a benefit to her classmates. While Ester has some struggles in human social interaction, her autism allows her to be more empathetic and enables her to communicate with sea animals. Ester’s roommates (Ana and Nelinha) never look down on her for her quirks, they simply make the adjustments necessary to make her life simpler.

The audiobook narration was one of my favorite parts of this book. Soneela Nankani is a fantastic narrator, and she knocked it out of the park with this one. I also loved the sound effects that were played in the background. For example, there is a scene with Ana playing the pipe organ. The song that she is playing is featured in the background during that scene, and it really added to the reading experience.

Overall, another smash hit from Rick Riordan. Full of his trademark humor and fast-paced adventure, anyone who loves the Percy Jackson books absolutely has to check out Daughter of the Deep ASAP. It is aimed at a middle-grade audience, but I believe that readers of all ages will be able to enjoy this book. If you are able, I highly recommend checking out the audiobook. As of right now, I believe the book is intended to be standalone but I’m crossing all my fingers and toes that he expands on the universe in the future. I would love to see what’s next for the new Captain Nemo and her crew.

I've loved all of Rick Riordan's books since the Lightning Thief came out, and have bought all his mythology books since. In this story, Rick Riordan does not disappoint and leaves you on the edge of your seat by the end of the book wondering what Lester's fate will ultimately be. Robbie Daymond is a skillful narrator who brings all the characters to life and left me laughing multiple times. I also love how Rick Riordan begins all the chapters with a haiku to give a sneak peek of what will happen. I'm kind of shocked he was able to come up with so many. Can't wait to see what Rick Riordan and Robbie Daymond will do in the final book of the series, The Tower of Nero. Definitely a series and an author that people of all ages can enjoy.
