Ethan Avery’s Frostfire, the first book in the Sword and Sorcery series, is an awesome debut fantasy novel perfect for young adults and adults alike. Filled with great worldbuilding, a unique magic system, and fantastic characters, I look forward to seeing what else Avery will do with the storyline in the future.
First of all, the cover of this book is amazing and what convinced me to check it out (without even reading the blurb). It definitely captures the vibe and the feel of the book very well. I also was quite pleased by the drawings that were included throughout the book; they added a whimsical, fantastical sense to the story.
The worldbuilding is imaginative and vivid in Frostfire. I think every fan of fantasy will find something to suit their tastes in this book (fantastical creatures, vibrant settings, and the archetypal “quest” to name a few options). If I had to describe it, Frostfire is almost like a starter epic fantasy book (great for those who want a taste of the epic fantasy style and genre without committing to a larger book and/or series). I really appreciated how expansive Mr. Avery made everything feel without ever having an ‘info dump’ moment.
To touch on one specific aspect of worldbuilding, the magic system the author designed was interesting. Magic in Frostfire is largely cost-based (requiring the use of dust by all except elves). I did note that there are some aspects of the magic system that haven’t been explained yet, and that will definitely be a reason for me to check out the next book in the series (I love piecing together how magic systems work in books). I’m curious if the cost-based nature of the magic will serve as an equalizing factor in some situations.
Outside of the worldbuilding and magic system, the other major feature of the book I enjoyed was the characters. Frostfire had a great balance of an engaging, action-packed plot and well-developed characters. Each character had their own unique personality; I enjoyed getting to know Aireyal, Erevan, Nya, and Zale. Admittedly, there were a couple of times when the transition between the dual points of view and parallel storylines got confusing but that was a minor issue.
Overall, this was an entertaining and engaging fantasy debut. I will definitely be on the lookout for the next installment in the series! Thank you to the author Ethan Avery and Jaime at Rockstar Book Tours for providing me with a complimentary review copy of the book. I appreciate the opportunity to read and review the book immensely! Please note - I voluntarily read and reviewed Frostfire. All opinions expressed in the review are my own and not influenced in any way.

About Ethan Avery:
Ethan Avery
believes in the power of stories. As a child growing up in Ohio, they gave him
a chance to see a bigger world, and to hear what life was like for people that
didn’t look like him or believe what he did. And now, years later, he hopes to
do the same for others. When he's not writing novels, directing movies, or
wasting other people's time with his YouTube channel, Ethan plays video games
(poorly), basketball (painfully), and D&D (problematically with
praiseworthy peers). Send him a tweet @StoriesByEthan, he loves nerding out!
