The Blue Bloods are
back…more fanged and fabulous than ever.
After defeating Lucifer and sacrificing the love of her life, Jack, Schuyler
wakes up back in New York safe and sound. Only it’s not quite the New York she
knows, and she’s not in her regular body. She looks different and feels
different and so does everyone else. Schuyler soon discovers that in this
world, her best friend has a different last name, her parents are both alive
and well and one of them is an entirely different person, and the love of her
life? Not so dead after all. The catch? Jack has no idea who she is.
As it turns out, Schuyler is not in her New York. She’s not even in her
universe. This is an alternate reality. One where Lucifer is alive and well and
acting as mayor of New York, Blue Bloods are luring humans to clinics to drain
their blood, and Jack is Lucifer’s right hand man. Just when she thinks all is
lost, Schuyler is contacted by a familiar friend―the Silver Blood, Kingsley.
The Kingsley from her world. He actually remembers the Schuyler she used to be!
But he also has a theory, and it’s one she doesn’t like. That Schuyler was sent
here to defeat Lucifer. Again. And that she’s the only person in this universe
or any universe that can defeat him.

world? Read the original series and the spin off books now!
Rating: 3.5 Stars

Melissa de la Cruz’s After Life is a spin-off or almost reboot from the original books. Schuyler goes to sleep one night (after doing one of the hardest things she’s ever done), but she ends up having an almost Alice in Wonderland experience and wakes up in a New York she does not recognize. In this new alternate universe, she is no longer an orphan. Jack is alive but has no idea who she is. And the one fallen angel she gave up everything to defeat is now in charge and happily running the show. Will Schuyler be able to pull herself together and defeat Lucifer in the process, or will she see herself lose everything she once cared about in this strange new world?
One of my complaints about the first book was the excessive brand-name dropping; I get it, the blue bloods are uber-rich. You don’t have to keep driving that point home in the same way over and over. Thankfully, the author seemed to listen to feedback on that particular issue and dialed in on the story more. Now, instead of focusing on surface-level matters, readers can get to the heart of the action and the mystery much quicker.
The world-building was also expanded a little bit in this book. One of my favorite parts of the original books was the soulmate bond, and I appreciate how that remains in effect (even across universes). There are some things I still wish the author would develop more or go into more detail on, but that wasn’t enough to detract from my reading experience.
In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve only finished the first book in the original series, and I admittedly had a couple of issues understanding what was going on due to lack of context. Technically, I think you could read this book without reading the others and not be too lost, but I recommend reading the books in order (and completing the series) for the best reading experience.
Overall, this was an entertaining read. Definitely an improvement over the first book, but not quite a full five stars yet. This will appeal to fans of the original series, but those new to the Blue Bloods universe might be a bit harder to win over.
Thank you to the author, Disney-Hyperion, and Jaime at Rockstar Book Tours for providing me with a complimentary ARC of the book. I appreciate the opportunity to read and review After Life immensely. Please note - I voluntarily read and reviewed the book. All opinions expressed in the review are my own, and not influenced in any way.
