REVIEW Of Jade and Dragons by Amber Chen

Of Jade and Dragons by Amber Chen
Rating: 4 Stars
Release Date: June 18, 2024
Format: Audiobook (Borrowed from Library)
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers

Reminiscent of a steampunk cross between Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow and Disney’s Mulan, Amber Chen’s debut novel Of Jade and Dragons was a very engaging read. Aihui Ying has always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps and becoming an engineer. But after she witnesses his murder, she becomes determined to get revenge and discover who sent the assassin, sneaking into the legendary Engineering Guild’s apprentice trial to do so.

I loved the worldbuilding in this book. The peace and tranquility of Ying’s home is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city where the Engineering Guild is located. The concepts presented by both the masters and the apprentices during the trials were well thought out, and I appreciated what they added to the story. I also enjoyed how the author gave hints of other places in the book's world (since readers stay in the Nine Isles), and I hope she explores them later in the series. I especially want more dragons to make an appearance in this book.

The characters were where I struggled a little with this book, and why I couldn’t give it a full five stars. The main premise of the book is Ying seeking the truth of her father’s death, and the revenge that would come with that. While she’s a strong female character who’s filled with intelligence, curiosity, and determination (and I am all for that), I feel like that thread of motivation was lost at times. Given its culmination at the end of the book, things didn’t have the same impact for me as I feel was intended. Ying’s relationship with Ye-yang was also a little hard to decipher. They are not given a lot of on-page time to build their relationship, so I didn’t feel like some of the twists and drama made sense at the end of the book. There are some threads left open, however, so I do feel like the author has the potential to flesh things out more in any sequels and that leaves me hopeful.

Overall, an excellent read. I’m excited to get to see how the sequel will play out, especially with how things stand between Ying and Ye-yang. I’m also curious to see if some of the members of the Engineering Guild will make an appearance in subsequent books. Jen Zhao did a fantastic job bringing Ying’s story to life with her performance in the audiobook narration. If you would enjoy an Asian-inspired fantasy novel complete with elements of romance, steampunk, and even a bit of an academia spin you’ve come to the right place.

Shadow Bound Souls, blends Science Fiction and classic high fantasy in a steampunk world.

The frontier of alchemy, magic and machines nears a breaking point.

Book two of The Luminance Saga is an action-packed sci-fi fantasy adventure, charged with a tension inherited from the epic climax of book one. Shadow Bound Souls picks up where the first novel left off, with a band of heroes stranded in a world on the brink of war.

The Sagean Lord has emerged.
While the Wrythen's influence grows stronger, the Sagean and his power-hungry acolytes, the Court of Dragons, are intent on delivering the gem of souls to the Temple of Ama; where the Sintering Fountain can transform the acolytes into Luminaries.

Meanwhile, the band of heroes find themselves separated in a world starting to tear itself apart. Having suffered a huge loss, Ellaria and Elias must escape the Mainland with the Sagean’s agents pursuing them. When Elias becomes sick, Ellaria decides to hide amongst the Showman’s Traveling Show of Wonders. But their journey is shadowed by darkness and when troupe members turn up murdered, Ellaria struggles to find the killer amongst her company.

Far away in the Warhawk Mountains, the three young rogues are stranded with the Tempest Stone. Aimless about what to do, their paths take a turn when they discover the horrifying magnitude of the Sagean’s return to power, the Scree.

Shadow Bound Souls continues the steampunk saga with a sequel that takes the plot to greater depths while expanding upon the immersive world; with an ending that hurtles the series toward the coming World War.

Excerpt from Shadow Bound Souls:

...

The three of them walked into town on foot and for the longest time, Learon didn't see anyone around. It was beginning to feel like a ghost town. A few shapes were seen inside houses, but Learon didn't stop until they reached the town center.

In the open green space, about fifty townspeople lingered aimlessly. Learon almost went past them to the Inn until the truth of what they were doing hit him. He realized they weren't moving. The sight of them standing still chilled him to his bones.

"What's wrong with them?" Tali whispered.

"I don't know. I tried talking to a few of them and none responded. Sometimes they'll look at you, but that's it," Wade said.

Learon surveyed the area and waved for the others to follow, "Come on, I need to find Rose."

He ran over to the Inn and up the porch steps. There were others inside all in the same static state, and a foul smell of mildew and excrement made it hard to breathe. In the kitchen, the smell was worse. There he found Jema, the cook. She was standing in the darkened room with a knife in her hand. The ghosted look in her eyes was frightening. They were glossy and yellowing.

"Jema. Jema, where's Rose?" Learon said, but there was no response. Jema blinked and seemed to be breathing, but she didn't answer. He stepped closer to her.

"Be careful, Learon," Tali cautioned.

Learon tried again, this time touching Jema on the arm, "Jema, are you . . ."

At his touch, she took a step forward. The sudden movement startled Tali, and she backed into some empty egg crates. Learon moved away to give Jema space. Jema slowly strode to the counter and began to chop some rotten meat on the board. Jema's movements were almost mechanical and she did it all without registering their presence in the room.

Steven Rudy’s The Binding Tempest is an engaging blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk themes. Even before you start reading, it's obvious that the author put a lot of care and attention into the creation of this book. The maps are intricate and detailed. The cover is beautiful (this is a big part of why I picked up the series in the first place). The worldbuilding is innovative and unique, borrowing some of the best parts from each of the genres it mixes. There were a couple of minor issues here and there, but overall The Binding Tempest was a fun and entertaining read. As a bonus, at the time of writing this review, The Binding Tempest was available to Kindle Unlimited members to read for free.

The beginning of the book does take a bit to pick up steam, but it's worth pushing through. In my opinion, the author had to set the stage and the stakes before the real action could begin. While I completely understand this, there were moments where the movement of the story seemed to suffer in the name of worldbuilding. Despite these small hiccups, the worldbuilding was well worth it. Mr. Rudy’s descriptions are vivid and detailed, and I had no issues envisioning the picture that the author was painting for readers.

One thing I found curious about the book was the age of the characters. In many books aimed at young adults, the characters are of similar age as the intended audience. The cast of characters in The Binding Tempest spans a wide age range, making this a strong choice for those who looking for a book that's not focused on your stereotypical “teenager” storylines. The interactions between the older group and the younger group helped endear the characters to me and make me invested in their story. My favorite character, out of everyone, was Ellaria.

Overall, a very strong debut novel. I would recommend this book to steampunk fans, and those who enjoyed franchises like Wheel of Time or Indiana Jones. If you love books heavy on worldbuilding (like me), then The Luminance Saga is a great choice. I’m excited to read the sequel, Shadow Bound Souls (which comes out in February 2022), and see how the story progresses.

Thank you to the author, Mystic Hawk Press, and Jaime at Rockstar Book Tours for providing me with a complimentary review copy of the book as part of my participation in the blog tour for the sequel Shadow Bound Souls.
