Katie and Kevin Tsang’s Dragon Mountain is such a fun book, and I’m so happy that I was introduced to it by Bookstagram. Percy Jackson and the Olympians meet How to Train Your Dragon in this cinematic, action-packed middle-grade fantasy read. It’s so fun and imaginative that I found myself hooked from the very first page.
From the first chapter, readers are introduced to Billy, who we later follow to a summer camp his parents are sending him to in middle-of-nowhere China. Once there, he makes some new friends and is introduced to the legend of Dragon Mountain. As many say, every legend has a kernel of truth at its center, and Billy and his friends are about to find themselves smack dab in the middle of one. Will they be able to unite with their new dragon friends, and save the world from the Dragon of Death before it's too late? You’ll have to read the book to find out! (But, seriously. Read the book. It will be worth it, I swear).
Dragons make any story better, and this one was no exception. If I bonded with one of the dragons in the book, it would most likely be Buttons or Spark. Those two were my favorite (Tank and Xing are probably a little too serious for my tastes). Overall, all the human characters and the dragon characters were amazing! I loved how the children were all from different backgrounds and cultures, but they were made stronger together. They all had unique personalities that worked well together and made the story better.
The worldbuilding was also great in this book. I never had any issues envisioning the setting or what was going on. I’d love to see the dragon’s hoards and visit the Dragon Realm too (when it's not being ruled by an evil power-hungry dragon, of course). There were some questions that I had while reading, but I think those were ultimately setups for answers the authors will provide in later books in the series.
Altogether, Dragon Mountain was an entertaining and humorous read that I will happily recommend to all the young readers in my life. If you’re a fan of diverse fantasy stories (and anything referencing dragons) you should definitely pick up this book. I’m off to go find myself a copy of the next book in the series, Dragon Legend. Wish me luck!

Hi! We are Katie and Kevin Tsang - children’s authors, parents, and adventurers. Katie is originally from California and also writes YA as Katherine Webber. Kevin was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, but grew up in Atlanta, Georgia.
We met many moons ago studying abroad in a magical place called Hong Kong. Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to travel around the world together, live on three different continents, and we even got married. We now live in London with our baby daughter. We spend our days making up stories and thinking about what we want for dinner.
