In my opinion, having the author be the narrator of their own story lends a certain authenticity and emotional depth that wouldn’t have been available otherwise. I already respected Michelle Obama, and after hearing more about how she became the first lady my respect for her has only skyrocketed.
Many of the events that she touches on in the book have already been presented to the United States to an extent. However, the in-depth explanation of what happened behind the scenes was eye-opening. Michelle has a unique ability to transmit the emotions that she was experiencing in each moment, years after the individual event.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about the Obamas. The audiobook is worth picking up, as she is an amazing narrator! Her insight and sensitivity shine through in every chapter. I appreciate the reminder that there are still things to be hopeful about in the country, even if politics and politicians don’t seem worth the effort most of the time.
