Interview with Ziah Miller, author of Maggie Turncoat and the Empire of Chains (Forgotten Bastions Series)

Hi friends! I am so excited to welcome Ziah Miller to my blog today. His debut novel, Maggie Turncoat and the Empire of Chains came out last year (as the first book in the Forgotten Bastions series). I wanted to take this opportunity to interview Ziah and get to know him better. Make sure you add the book to your TBR today (links to do so are below).

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Ziah!

About the Book

Those in power have no loyalty; they will betray you without a second thought. How can you be a traitor to a ruler who only sees you as a resource? Cut the chains that bind you, free your soul, rise up, and tear their world asunder.

After watching her father's execution at the command of the Queen her family supported, Maggie becomes the turncoat her father was accused of being. Faced with fight or flight, Maggie runs towards the danger and rises up to help free those put in chains by a kingdom she once promoted. Journey with Maggie as she becomes the Turncoat Witch.

Set in a time when gas lamps were considered a luxury, using electricity was unheard of, and muskets were the primary source of military dominance. Magic has been forgotten or forsaken, only appearing as a rare novelty that is nothing more than entertainment.

This universe Maggie is a part of was created long before her book was ever written. With established rules and lore, it is a universe she is discovering along with the reader.

Explore the debut novel of Ziah Miller, a Game Developer who tells countless stories to his nieces and nephews of worlds hidden among our stars. Discover more about the forgotten bastions of life out there beyond the void.

Maggie holds her breath, looks down from the Queen and makes eye contact with her father one last time. The Queen’s hand drops and a judge next to the firing squad yells, “FIRE!”

Q&A with the Author, Ziah Miller

What are four things you can't live without?
I cannot live without Ice cream; I consume it weekly. The gym to help my anxiety. Open World Video Games, years lost on Skyrim and Breath of the Wild. And last, a white noise machine. A must for me to sleep.

What is your favorite television show?
Star Trek Deep Space Nine. I watched it all as a kid, and it got me into good storytelling.

Where do you get your inspiration, information, and idea for books?
I daydream a lot on fan theories for stories I love. They help come up with ideas.

Do you write full-time or around another job? If you have a full-time job, does it ever play into your writing?
I am a full-time software engineer for mobile games. It does not directly cross over to writing, but it is a fun and rewarding job.

What three works of art have most influenced your writing?
Diablo and World Of Warcraft are massive influences in my world. Deep Space Nine has some significant impact and is the show I look fondly on. The book series that got me wanting to write was The Pride of Chanur; my mother would read them to me.

What is your favorite writing snack and/or drink?
My favorite snack is sugar-coated cashews, and I consume way too much mountain dew.

What was your hardest scene to write and why?
My mood depends on what scene I like to write. I usually do poorly at romantic scenes.

What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?
My first draft was atrocious with massive head-hopping. I have learned so much through utilizing data readers.

Aside from writing, what is one thing you do for fun?
I play World of Warcraft with a few friends and peddle on a stationary bike.

What projects do you have coming up next?
I am currently writing a book called Twin Souls. It is about a boy who has lived a conflicted and tormented life. Only to discover when he is fourteen that he has two souls—his twin whose body died during birth.

About the Author

I am a game developer who does creative projects in my spare time. The first book I wrote and produced is Maggie Turncoat And The Empire Of Chains. A story I would tell my nieces and nephews who convinced me to write it.
